I saw a guy over at the 'Strat Talk' forum asking what guys thought he'd get for a strat so i thought i'd ask you guys something. My cousin got me into the guitar in the first place because he played and had this red strat. It was a late 60's early 70's model and looked great at the time. Anyway for years i periodically would inquire as to what happened to the guitar, because i knew he never played anymore. I never got an answer as no one seemed to know and i didn't see him much. Anyway i was visiting a relative and in one of the rooms downstairs there it was!! The case was leaning against the wall and was all beat to hell. I opened it and there the red strat was. It was in great condition but obviously all out of tune and the bridge was raised miles from the body. Anyway i pester him to sell it to me, but he won't do it. Even though he doesn't play it or ever use it. It seems a shame and i'd like to have it but it is what it is. I think he has the idea that it will net him a lot of cash from a collector one day. But i tried to tell him it's not considered a vintage strat. As far as i know the 57 and the 62 are the models people pay big bucks for. Personally i can't see one like this fetching a lot of cash. But you never know. It's red with a maple neck and quite a beauty! 8)

Do a search on Ebay or any site. They're pretty pricy. I'd keep it.

Consider that your cousin might be hanging on to it for other than pecuniary reasons. Don't underestimate the sentimental value, even of items that are never used. Perhaps especially for items that are never used.

If he wants to keep it, respect that and stop pressuring him. If you manage to convince him, it will likely only lead to bad feelings.

Absolutely. Sometimes it can be even more painful selling something you love to someone you know over a complete stranger. At least, in going to a stranger, the bond is broken.

A guitar is a very intimate possession in the same way the tools of a craftsman. They may have little value but, to the owner, can be irreplaceable.

Yeah guys i think that's what it is. It's a thing that's emotional to him and even though he no longer plays guitar he doesn't want to sell it.

The day may come when I stop playing, but right now I can't imagine that.

'Blue Notes': Yeah maybe. I hoped that he'd say something like "oh you can have that! I'm not interested in that anymore!" Alas no. I haven't actually pestered him to sell it as in every week or month or year asking him about it. I've only asked maybe twice in the last 20 years or so. When i said i pestered him to sell that was kind of like a figure of speech. I think he's hoping that one day it'll be valuable like a 57 or a 62 strat is and he can cash it in. Funny thing is the pic in your avatar is almost exactly like his guitar!! Red strat with maple neck!

GorgonIsBack, I don't know if it'll ever reach stratospheric prices or not, but I bet it is one fine guitar like you say, and I sincerely hope your cousin will see fit to grant it to you some day.

Is there any way you could snap some pics of it, I'd love to see it.

Yeah Blue Notes all it would need is a new set of strings and the bridge lowered down and it would be set. It's the old bigger headstock type and i think it has two string tree's. I'll see if i can get a few pics the next time i'm up there. That was the instrument that got me into playing guitar because one day we went up there and he was playing stuff and it sounded other worldly to me. I was about 14 or so. Then he gave me a few of his Hendrix albums to listen to and when i heard 'Electric Ladyland' my jaw was on the floor! I'd never heard anything like it and that's how i got started.

Awesome Gorgon, sounds like some great memories. The Stratocaster really does take you to another world, and when you wrap your hands around a real good one, man you never forget it.
