Hey everyone!
I bought two Tex-Mex pickups from Craigslist, neck and middle positions. Obviously, they could be fake, but, the elderly gentleman was VERY believable.
I'm getting ready to install them, and I need to know plus (or 'hot") from ground. The neck pickup has, as you would expect, a black and a white lead. So, black should be ground. The middle, however, has a red and a white lead. I called Fender and they said ALL fender p'ups have black and white ONLY.
Anybody seen this before? I'm guessing red would be ground. I know if I hook 'em up and try it, it'll be out of phase if I have the leads wrong, but, I'm not sure I will be able to hear out of phase.
Is there a simple solution? And I don't have any testing equipment and really hope not to have to purchase any. Every time I post something like this I get told to buy something that is "ONLY" $XXX.000. I never use the word "only" in front of a $. I'm trying to spend $000.000 and get this thing wired for a job in three weeks.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,

GUS

That was my first impression too, cuz some p'ups, GFS for example, use "Color" for standard hot leads. But, the other one is black and white. wouldn't it be pretty rare for black NOT to be ground?
I hope I have authentic gear. The C/L seller claimed he removed these from a '05 American Standard, which, Fender says they did not make, as in, American Stanndard with Tex-Mex p'ups. That don't mean it wasn't C/S ordered or modded before my guy got it. How would I tell if they are Fender pickups? I don't think thet're the standard import cheapos. They don't have the bar magent behind the poles anyway.
And thanks for the input.

Here's a relatively recent discussion regarding Tex Mex pickups......

It's clearly not true about all Fender pickups having black and white wires only. SCN's have multiple colours, as do the Tex Mex's in the post linked by Arjay. And American Standard pickups used multiple coloured wires too.
Vintage Noiseless had black and white and black and yellow in their set too.

Hi there pickups may be tex mex from a mahogany strat I would go with red as ground and white as hot. In position 4 neck and mid you it will sound feeble if you have it wrong. :D

Nice discovery on that Mahogany Strat, j_j.
And apparently st52 was right; white = hot, red = ground.
Here's a pic originally from SD forum, showing "original wiring" for a 2007 American Deluxe (on some net pages it goes under "Select" series, go figure...) Mahogany HSS:

Thanks man. Yep in an old thread we talked a little about this. The earlier ones were fsr and came in a few variants sss, hss, scn or tex mex pickups some had the S1 and some didn't and some had an lsr as well ... later fender brought them out as one of the first select series. For a std issue pickup and for me the tex mex are so so .... I prefer something more stratty in that range like the 57/62s but each to their own :D

Black is ground for all three pups.

At worst it's that a new hookup lead has been put onto the pickup.

I wired it up last night, white = "HOT", red = Ground. It was late, so I didnt string it up and test it. But, I am concerned, because on the neck p'up, which has black n white leads, the white lead is on the same side of the pickup as the red lead on the middle (RED N WHITE LEADS). Are all "hots" on the same side, and all grounds also?

Dunno, it doesn't make that much difference with singlecoils. At worst you've wired it same phase same polarity. Which while not hum cancelling in position 4, sounds better to my ear and is the way Strats came up until the end of the CBS days
