My Custom Shop Closet Classic came with the rear tone pot connected to the just the middle pickup (instead of bridge and middle).
I've heard of the EJ wiring variation where the rear tone pot controls just the bridge -- but not just middle.
Is this a normal variation? Or do you think someone just made a mistake?

Sounds like vintage original wiring to me. Back in the early years the upper tone was to neck pickup the lower tone to middle, and the bridge had no tone.

Correct.

That's the original configuration as designed by Leo. Many players (myself among them) add a jumper wire to the switch to permit the lower tone control to operate both the bridge and middle pickup. Another option (the "Jimmy Vaughan" mod) is to simply run the middle pickup wide open and wire to the lower tone pot to the bridge pickup. Both variations are useful and worthwhile alterations.

My preference. This also keeps only one tone control in the circuit for positions 2 and 4.

A closet classic would be a variation on a relic. So is it a period correct guitar? Strats were wired that way up until 1981 (I think). If it's a 50's/60's/70's reproduction. They've wired it period correct.

Wired my custom classic to be exactly the same way. Great live. Instant cut through on a muddy mix

Thanks all for the information!
I rewired the switch to put the tone pot on the bridge -- but after playing a few hours I think I'm gonna switch back to the original wiring with the tone on the middle. Sounded much better that way!

If you listen to Voodoo Chile. When Hendrix bends that A on the 2nd fret up and plays the open B. It's got this incredible wah effect going on. That's where he floored the tone control on the middle pickup. Operates the wah pedal and flicks backwards and forwards through the pickup selector switch as he's wah'ing.

One incredible trick with a traditionally wired strat.

If you want a best of both worlds. You could re-wire it with a no load pot on that tone control. And use the jumper wire trick. So that the tone pot acts on both the middle and bridge pickups. When the pot is on 10, it's not in the circuit. So essentially you're gaining the option of tone or no tone on the middle pickup too.

I'll just try and find the schem and highlight what you need to change
