Thanks for all your input... In the end, the online store from whom I purchased this guitar have allowed me to return it. I sent it off today.

In the end it was the knot that I couldn't deal with... It just didn't sit well with me.

Now I'm worried about buying another strat... I get the motivation to use thinner finishes but in the end, what really is an acceptable level of sinking/grain lines showing?

I've seen the grain showing through on this video, I personally find this pretty scary. What are your thoughts?

Yes, that is bad - never seen a pro guitar with a finish like that. The answer is not to buy online, unless you really have to!

Cheers - Peter.

For me as a left handed guitarist, I almost *have* to buy online. When I go into a store they are most likely to only have a Mexican Strat, perhaps a Squier Tele and maybe an Epiphone Les Paul in stock for me to buy. Anything else has to be ordered in specifically or purchased online.

+1

Absolutely. Belts -- like blades -- should be changed often, and for the same reason.

Ah right, sorry - didn't know you were a lefty. Just keep on moving those goalposts! :) Anyway, at least you've managed to return it, so the problem's gone! Better luck next time!

Cheers - Peter.

Problem is gone for now at least... :D

However I still do have serious guitar GAS for an Oly White Strat. I'm going to have to make the leap sometime and the potential to get another one with finish flaws is a real concern.

Funny.

I just watched the vid and To me it looks really cool.

I like the witness lines on mine. Looks like... There's real wood under the paint.

Mmm, love white Strats myself (or any Strats, really!) :) I suppose your best chance must be to make a big point of asking the retailer to check for such problems before sending, and hope they do...?

Seems to be the only way for people who care about those details...

A couple of years ago I was looking for a new Strat. Hanging on the wall of a respected music store was a 3 tone Sunburst with a knot the size of a silver dollar (or in this neck of the woods - a loonie). It was, surprisingly, the same retail price as the others!?

Well, I flirted with the idea of taking it home because the knot actually added to the look of the Sunburst having a good placement on the body. Kinda mojo. 8) I previously had a car with burl wood (although, different wood properties) throughout . . . so even knowing the possible problems, I was ready to take the chance. In the end, I chose a maple neck instead of the rosewood neck with the body knot. Still, I'm betting it found a home.

Wouldn't want the axe with a solid colour and a knot though.

Just an update: I returned the guitar and got a full refund. So "all good" in the end.

I'm now thinking of buying an Elite - Sunburst with Maple fret board.

Thanks again for all your views and your assistance in helping me decide to return the guitar.

WOW never seen anything aside from horrible cheap £15 new guitars from the 1970's have that problem.

It looks to me like the final coats have been sprayed without the other coats being dry. It's rough that's for sure
