first time i gigged abroad i got searched and swabbed for plastic explosive residue on the way out at stanstead. the bass player and drummer got the full treatment when we landed at genoa and on the way out of italy the other guitarist got pulled in at gun point and questioned. every time after that no matter where we went we had no trouble with customs or searches until the guitar impound incident. This leads me to believe they keep some kind of record of your activities thats alot more redily available to airport staff than anything we know about.

Ha! You should start a thread on that: musicians' nightmares at passport control.

I once knew an ex-customs officer (slightly). He claimed in that job they just developed a sixth sense for who the malefactors are, and can nearly always focus on the wrong-doers and leave the innocents alone.

Yeah, sure. Friend of mine gets torn apart each and every time he crosses a frontier. I used to think he was exaggerating, till I started travelling with him and found it was true. And he is just about the last person in the world to try to smuggle a can of Pepsi through customs, let alone anything serious. Could it be something to do with his skin colour? We'll never be able to prove it.

Suffice it to say, if you're carrying an instrument case then in the mind of every customs officer in the world you are probably Al Capone and you've likely got a machine gun in there. The rubber gloves are just an expression of their disappointment when it turns out not to be true...

Cheers - C

Man: on some other recent comparisons, I had thought that the days of buying guitars in America and carrying them home were over. I guess on these slightly less "standard" models that ain't so... Hmmph...

i tried that after a gig in portland, left a encore strat backstage after the gig in the morning bought a pawn shop strat for $450 about £300-350 at the time. when i got back to brum customs seized my guitar and demanded i pay import tax on it. They knew everything what guitar i'd took out and what i'd bought back and their prices. one impounded guitar unless i pay import VAT (normal vat in disguise) and customs duty. They have really tightend up on the cheap import buisiness.

OUCH! I know several people been got that way - including my brother-in-law. Unfortunately, those crocodiles at Customs know their stuff. American guitars, Persian carpets, Swiss watches: they've seen it all a thousand times and it just ain't worth trying to yank their plank.

"Officer, this vintage Les Paul Custom in my case is one and the same as the flimsy Tokai lookalike I took out of the country a few days ago..."

"I'm sure it is, Sir. Now just step over into this little room whilst I get my rubber gloves on. Till I let you out of here you belong to ME!"

Oo-er... - C

I was thinking of buying from England or Germany, but even if I do, I'll still be paying more than I would if I bought a guitar from the States (incl. shipping and Customs Duty). : (
