Still, I got this one strictly for playing, not polishing.
 I like your style. Playing you do a fine job of it indeed, so glad this is not a glass case instrument and is being used for what it is meant to do. As for me, my playing does not deserve such a piece of fine craftsmanship from Leo's shop, it would be wasted on my talent, so I am happy with my 2012 Am standard, and even happier for you as you can make that guitar sing.

Doing anything to it at all outside of regular maintenance will lessen its value substantially, leave it like it is.

That was and is a treat. Too bad Leo isn't here to enjoy that. I know he would approve of both your playing and purchase as we all do. Wishing you many years of enjoyment with that wonderful piece of history.

I have a couple of the custom shop relic's. I still like them quite a lot and play them often but have found that the mojo of a vintage guitar goes beyond the age of the guitar. There are properties of this '55 that haven't been part of a custom shop run. For example, Fender has no issue with heavy relicing the body and wearing down the necks but worn down and chipped plastic is probably not marketable on a new guitar. The curved edges to the '54 and '55 pickup covers was something that occurred over time due to the plastic used. It was not a uniform curving as we see on the tribute '54 and '55 models. The Fender spaghetti logo of the '50's and early 60's is not exactly right on any of the latter-day Fenders - AV, Custom Shop, or Masterbuilt. Comparing the fonts for the letter E displays the difference most clearly. The fonts for the bridge-piece stamps are also a bit different between an original and any tribute model. I intend to do a video detailing these differences. -Marty

Post photo comparisons too if you can Marty.

I pretty much agree with all the spec differences that you pointed out accept that the very first 1954 Stratocasters did in deed come new with rounded/curved pickup covers.

All in all, in my opinion these differences don't add up to much.

Ah yes, thanks for the correction on the pickup covers! Yes, the sum of the differences aren't great. The most significant difference is the light weight - but that can and is replicated on some tribute models if one is lucky enough to find a featherweight model. I've just found the details to be interesting.

add my name to the list of admirers for both the guitar and your playing.

it does my heart good to see a magnificent guitar land in the talented hands of someone who knows how to play it, and not just store it under a bed.

I wish you and your guitar many happy years of making music together!

Fantastic guitar and playing!

I was hoping someone would ask about the truss rod, but no one did so I guess I will. It looks like there's an adjustment access at the neck heel. However, it also looks like there's a place to adjust the rod on the headstock. After studying the pictures, the headstock area looks like a wooden plug and I don't see a hole. What's the story on the truss rod?

The truss rod is accessed at the neck's heel. There is a walnut plug located at the headstock.

Thanks! The under the pickguard pix are on page 2. Yes, the old nut is on it's last legs but still working well enough. I will likely need to consider a trade-out in the not too distant future. -Marty
