Great pics! thanks for sharing. the next time you change strings can you post under the pickguard pics?

Will do, I have a couple below from my last investigation. The neck as shown dates to September of '55. The pots are August '55. Taking the springs off, I could see the body date of '55 but I haven't removed the clutch to see the month. Looking at the picture I posted of the back (previous post), it could be 7/55: ImageImage

Ditto what the guys said above without reservation.

Really looking forward to seeing some detail pictures and delighted for you in your purchase. More so that the guitar is being used as intended and not hung on a wall like some sort of hunting trophy.

Thanks John. I often rant about business professionals who pay big bucks for an old Strat or Gibson, learn a blooze lick or two and then relegate the guitar to their living room wall for decades thus raising the price of the guitar so far beyond the reach of those that would actually play them. But I also thought about another point in your phrase about the guitar "being used as intended". I chose a '50's country song to play on the '55 because, in the literature I've read, country is what Leo intended for the Strat. The whammy was for pedal steel effects and it's quite good for that but we more often hear it used for Hendrix-type dive bombs (which I love as well). It's really a timing phenomenon that rock and roll just happen to kick start and go into full production in the same years as the Strat. -Marty

Great playing, great guitar and now pictures which are close on guitar porn. This thread gets better and better.

I agree with your thoughts that so many of these instruments are now beyond the reach of people who would truly appreciate them. Great that at least one more is now in the hands of someone who does.

To all the people who spend their money on manufactured road worn guitars. This is what a REAL road worn guitar is and looks like. 8)

Marty, thanks for posting the pics, always great to see an all original example of one of Leos greatest creations especially on his birthday. Glad you are playing it and playing it well.

Indeed so. But then often those who buy a roadworn would dearly love an original but, for what ever reason, this isn't possible.

Is it almost Chicken & Egg? Is the popularity of relic guitars boosting the desire for old battered original guitars? There was a time when an old guitar wouldn't have received a second look unless it was pristine. Now it is perhaps more desirable in showing it has been used.

Looks like the previous owner didn't care much for intonation.
Nice little bit of history you've grabbed there!!
Congrats!

Not sure if you're interested in this but a careful disassembly of the rusted and crusty parts and going at them gently with a brass wire wheel could take a lot of years off the appearance of it. The key word being gently. Even brass can strip or at least thin any remaining nickel plating if you use enough force. Once cleaned up you could protect the pieces from further oxidization with some kind of metal polish. Could make your relic look less relic'd ... if that's the sort of thing you'd be interested in. Might even increase the value of the piece by making it appear to be in better condition.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Probably been used for slide and the screws rusted in place.

Or you could take the mythical answer that Fender produced guitars of such quality then, they didn't need intoning.
(personally I'd be going with the intoning lie. I think that's a good myth to spread around)

With those rusty bridge pieces set so uniformly across it does indeed appear as if the intonation would be off. However it's actually right on up the neck. Thanks for the tips on cleaning it up. I certainly could go down that road and I know you are not suggesting I refinish it or anything. Still, I got this one strictly for playing, not polishing.
