After not using for a while, I got my 2005 American Deluxe out of the case. The S-1 switch is not working in the on/depressed position. With S-1 enabled, volume is cut significantly -- I'd say by 90%. (edit) Same for all 5 pickup positions.

I've opened it up and can't see loose wires or soldering, and gave it a bit of a clean with air but no change. Is this a common problem with S-1 switching? Anyone experience similar? Is this a problem with the pickup, switch or something else? Advice?

Thanks in advance.

I know you said you examined the internals but maybe, just to be sure, take a magnifying glass and a chopstick and gently moved the wires back and forth with the chopstick while looking closely at the soldered connections.
Good lighting will be of help as well.
Sometimes a broken solder joint can look sound to the naked eye.
The idea behind the chopstick it that it is very narrow on the business end which will allow you to be sure you're only touching one joint at a time, rather than sticking your big meathooks in there.
Also gives you more room to see clearly.

Try spraying some Caig De-Oxit contact cleaner directly into the switch then briskly pressing/releasing it several times. Repeat as necessary.

Thanks, how did you know? ;)

But seriously, I'm assuming the likelihood is it's a solder or connection issue not a defective switch? The advice I'm getting around here is to order a new switch.

(edit) Thanks Retro, I tried compressed air in and around the switch.

Compressed air can sometimes remove particulates but de-oxit will remove gunk.

+3 on the de-oxit.

Gee all five positions is starting to sound like a switch issue.
Have you tried depressing it rapidly 20 odd times to see if the connections clean up?
Otherwise it may need a good clean or replacement ... :D

Just wanted to post an update on this. Definitely not the switch. The problem is the middle N3 pickup. Tap the pickup with a pick, or move it with a finger, and it will go from working to not working.

The middle pickup is wired for all 5 positions active with the S1 switch engaged stock from the factory. I think that's why I thought it was the switch when no pickup worked with S1 engaged. More experimentation proved that the middle pickup didn't work with S1 disengaged. Bridge and neck (with S1 disengaged) and none with (S1 engaged).

Thanks.

Ah well done.
I had assumed (wrongly) everything had been ok in the non depressed position...twas a vital piece to the puzzle that went unmentioned.
Yes the SCNs have a habit of intermittent or non operation.
You could try disassembly and resoldering but generally replacement is the easiest.
Make sure you buy the right SCN pickup since there are two types.
Thanks for the update
