Hey !

So few days ago i purchased my first Stratocaster.
It's a gorgeous 60th anniversary 1954 reissue (2014).
Because it's a second hand i checked everything from top to bottom... All the added pages, signed authentication page, spair parts, are included in the vintage case (saw the unboxing video).
The only thing that caught my eye is that the Fender logo, on the head is a sticker and not painted like in any other guitar. Even thhe small "original...." is a sticker...
Is this legit ? Does anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

Thanks for any advice and help.
ABG !

It's not a sticker - it's a waterslide transfer.
It's been that way for most of Fender's history.

I can't comment on any new standard Strats (cos I haven't been out trying them lately), but my 2012 American Deluxe has the transfer sprayed over.
This is the exception, rather than the norm.

Your guitar is a '54 recreation, so it will have the waterslide and no lacquer sprayed over.

Just to add:

As stratmangler says Fender used to use waterslide decals placed over the finish; these days they still use decals but put them under the finish. The USA vintage reissue-style models - the AVs, Custom Shop vintage-styles, and the Clapton and Johnson signature models - have the waterslide decal over the finish; everything else has it under the finish. From a historical perspective the decals have been under the finish since about 1967/68 - whenever a model went to the thick black CBS-era decals.

Cheers guys for the history lesson and for the detailed information.

so just another question,
is there a way to get a waterslide decal replacement (beside ebay) ? I bet that one day it will wear off...

Yes, they can and do wear off. I've seen a few Relics from the Custom Shop where the "relic-ing" process took most of the decal off. But I think that Fender will provide a replacement decal to their authorized repair centers if provided documentation (photos of the damaged decal, sales receipt with serial number, photos of the serial number, etc.). They do that to cut down on counterfeiting. Most (if not all) the decals you'll find on ebay will be fakes; if they are not fakes then they are decades old from back when Fender more freely sent out replacement decals.

I did neglect to mention the American Deluxe/American Elite models; they used raised metallic decals/appliques, but aside from the first batches of American Deluxes from back in 1998 they are also under the finish. On the first few batches of American Deluxes in 1998 they were over the finish, and it was found that some of the individual letters (in the "Stratocaster", "Telecaster", etc.) could be polished off of the headstock.

I am a little confused about this.
What is coming into such frequent contact with the logo area of your headstock that you suspect it will wear off?
Perhaps you should specify, for the sake of clarity, whether this "sticker" is on top of the clear-coat or if it is underneath the clear-coat.
If it is on top of the finish then we need to be discussing the possibility your Strat is not genuine.
If it is under then I have to wonder how you think it will wear off.
Are you the kind of rambunctious guitarist who routinely flails about the stage, frequently banging your headstock against drum-kits, mic-stands, P/A speaker poles, etc?

His guitar is a 60th Anniversary '54 Strat, and the water slide decal is correctly on the outside of the lacquer to replicate 1954 specs.
That's the way they were done back then.
I learned a long time ago to not touch the logo, so when I polish my guitar I leave the water slide decal alone. It's very easy to mess it up.

Here's a pic of my Fender Custom Shop '54 Strat, as you can see, the logo is on the outside of the lacquer.

That looks like quarter-sawn lumber.

Nice!

Right, I should have caught that.
My bad.

Yesterday I got my P-bass and there is a sticker on the neck. This is a waterslike decal? At first i could not belive that it is a sticker so i tried to pull it off and ,,F''from the logo is missing a little bit. However... can someone help?

Help you do what -- pull the remainder of the sticker off?

Thanks but I think I'll pass.

Model car builder advice:

To remove a waterslide decal, stick adhesive tape on it, then yank it off. Repeat as needed to remove all the bits, then a damp towel to clean off the water-based adhesive.

But don't do that to a Fender.

Take it to an Authorized Service Center. Let them authenticate it and take pictures. They can then order a new decal, and when they receive it you can take your bass back there and they'll remove the damaged original and put the replacement on.
