Last week I dropped my new American Standard Strat at a highly recommended luthier to get the guitar set up. He also recommended running the bridge flush, but he left a little room for play. After picking it up today, I noticed that the A string has a wicked buzz or vibration near the neck (not plugged in). It doesn't appear to be touching any frets, but it sounds pretty rough. I'm fairly new to guitars, but what could cause this issue with one string? I plan on taking it back to him later in the week. I've attached a video of the sound. Hope it works.

Lots of electric guitars (of pretty much any make and model) can and will exhibit some buzzing when not plugged in.
If you notice it buzzing when it's plugged in then you have cause for concern.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't exhibit the vibration or buzz through the amp, but I don't think I can stand it. The vibration occurs on an open A string. It can be heard while playing and it almost sounds like the vibration is at the neck or tune peg. It didn't make this vibration prior to being set up.

Check the nut first - many open string buzzes are related to it. Slot may be too narrow and the A doesn't sit properly on the bottom, or the slot may be shaped wrong and the string break point is somewhere behind the front edge. The slot may also be cut too low, but those first two are my first guesses.

Buzzes on the tuning peg area are also one possibility - hold your finger gently on the peg post (top/side/bottom...), then on the string behind the nut (headstock side). If you find a place where the buzz stops there's the culprit.

Anyway, the luthier/tech is responsible for his/her/its job, so take it back for a recheck. If that buzz bothers you enough to ask the forum, it will affect your playing; you won't forget it even though it doesn't come thru the amp.

open string buzzing but none of the fretted notes buzz is usually an indication that the fret slot is a bit too deep.

I'd call the guy who did the setup and ask if he can re-check it.

Did they lower the action?
Are you saying it is loud enough you can hear it acoustically over top of the amplified sound?

Absolutely!

If you're not satisfied, with the results of the service provided, have it redone. There is no reason to settle for anything less.

Agreed - take it back. Or take it to someone who knows what they're doing if you don't mind paying twice!

I don't mean to be a douchebag but if the guitar doesn't buzz when plugged in, why is it a problem?

Most electric solid bodied guitars do buzz unplugged... If you only play at home, at low volume (and I mean LOW) it might be an issue, but in the end that's not what the electric guitar was made for, now is it?

Maybe if you set up everything so that you can't hear unplugged buzz, your guitar will be uncomfortable. It happened to mo before.

Don't take it back to the same place.
That's silly.
Why give someone who already messed up your guitar. A chance to mess it up more?

They've probably set the trem flush and not adjusted the saddle height. I really doubt it's the nut slot as said, that only manifests itself on open strings and never on fretted notes. It could also be the neck pickup height.
I really doubt you'd see if the string was hitting the fret tops at all. They vibrate very quickly
