Hello,

I have plans on buying a 70’s reissue strat(mim), but I need some info for the upgrade. I want to replace the tuners and tremolo bridge with more modern style hardware. For the bridge something like the American Std tremolo bridge or a Wilkinson style one. For the tuners the locking variety if possible. I need to know what currently available hardware would fit a 70’s reissue without modification. I also need to find a replacement pickguard that will fit without modification too.

The 70s has a vintage style tremolo, right? With 6 screws? The "newer" bridges all have 2 screws...so you might be better staying with the vintage style...

It sounds like you want an American Deluxe model.

Why not just save up your money for one?

70's Reissue Strat with black modern hardware, custom electronics and custom pickguard.
That's my goal.

It's an 11 screw hole pickguard on the current MIM 70s reissue Strat. That is a standard 'guard, widely available from the likes of WD Music (.com) and many others. Just count the holes to be sure of getting the right one.

Also, you've a six screw vintage trem on that. Again, vintage style trems are easily available in black, also from WD, or Stewart MacDonald, or others.

That's so long as you are in North America. There is something or other in that black finish that just became illegal in Europe, so if you are in the EU you need to be looking at the new Cosmo translucent black that Gotoh have brought out to fill the gap that legislation has created. They're arriving on the market quite fast. (Though I notice that WD in England still have plenty of the old-style black hardware for sale - tut-tut, guys. Quick, while stocks last!)

Probably any six screw tremolo will fit, but when you get your 70s Reissue just measure the screw spacing and check against the specs of replacement ones before you purchase. That information is usually given on guitar parts websites.

More tricky: I notice Fender's spec sheet for the 70s Reissue mentions Fender/Schaller vintage F style tuning machines. Tuners named "vintage" normally fit 11/32 inch holes in the headstock, rather than modern 10 mm (13/32") holes. But in the case of a 70s instrument I just am not sure, and the spec sheet doesn't help. So I would wait till the guitar arrives and see which size peg holes you have on the headstock and get the right tuners to fit. A fulsome choice is available for either sized hole. Also, ideally, you want to buy replacement tuners with the same screw fixing position, so you don't need to redrill.

So wait and see what comes with the guitar and then match it. That shouldn't be problematic. Lots of usefully detailed pictures and diagrams on Schaller's website to help you find the right tuning machines:

Good luck - C
