My guess is that California's Air Resources Board is the culprit so if you feel like blaming someone, lay it at the feet of the eco-fascists and the climate-change clowns.

I agree on both counts, as I've stated many times here, I really love Fenders new AV series, but was disappointed with the lack of detail with the new cases, that' s why I custom ordered these. Marty, the tweed case that came with the 56' AV(I believe all other production tweed cases including custom shop are plastic tweed material)is covered in the fake plastic tweed, but the 54's center pocket case is real cotton tweed and can be lacquered.

Not long ago I bought a Custom Shop G & G tweed case -- embroidered CS logo on the inside of the lid with emerald green lining. I have no way of determining the actual age of the case but the exterior is authentic cotton linen. Perhaps the Custom Shop still rates the real deal.

I'm surprised Arjay all the cs tweed cases I've had were plastic tweed material, maybe it was a special run.

Yes, I also blame the Air Resources board for this - but in my case the blame is actually gratitude. Those of us who grew up choking from the smog in 1960's and '70s San Fernando Valley greatly appreciate the tree hugging efforts that have greatly reduced the number smog days over the years. Looking at the scenes from the China Olympics a few years ago brought back those unfavorable memories. I've visited the Fender factory and the lacquer process is much more environmentally controlled. Yeah, it puts a premium on our nitro guitars. -Marty

Shellac as used on amps in the past is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and renewable. Don't blame the environmentalists for Fender or CBS capitalist bean counters switching to toxic lacquers that cause problems and then having to phase those out.

Shellac is great for guitars too - I don't think any other finish beats the deep lustre of a French polished guitar.

It appears your avatar is pouring a bit of shellac right now! I mixed up a French polish for an acoustic guitar I built a few years ago. The guitar came out very nice but I wasn't patient enough to get the wonderful finish I've seen on other likewise finished guitars. However, the lack of dangerous fumes was a lot easier on my brain than the lacquer I first attempted. -Marty

There's a formula for how you have to keep on French polishing: twice as long.

Or cheat, and rub in the first layer, spray the next few layers to get depth, sand very lightly, and rub in the last layer with plenty of mineral oil for lubrication. I guess a master woodworker can tell the difference, but I can't.

Yeah, I am starting to get old enough that much of the stuff I painted and lacquered with without problems before now gives me headaches and breathing problems.
Same with waxing - with carnuba wax, there's no problems, but some of the more man-made guitar polishes make me sneeze quite a bit.
In both cases, it's not that hard to go eco-friendly. The result is great, and it won't disagree with human bodies much. It just takes more rubbing. That's the rub.

You are correct Marty, I should refer to this new series as AV, as they are in a whole different league as the previous reissues, I owned a few from the 80's and 90's and IMO were nothing like these. If you prefer vintage specs there is no reason to go CS, I've played several of these and they are better and more correct than the bunch of CS reissues I've owned and sold off in the past. I almost went for the Astec gold AV 59' but am really glad I chose the 3 tone instead.I have to say even though I'm not a rosewood guy, that sonic blue 59' really looks great. Any chance you could take a group shot of all your strats Marty? you certainly have a bunch!

A detail found in the post 2012 AV series that the Custom Shop doesn't do AND that fender never boasted about when advertising the new American Vintage series is under the hood. You'll find an oil & paper capacitor on the tone pot. I noticed it when installing the 3-position switch and was completely blown away.

Image I agree Marty, here is my blonde 56', I paid quite a bit for a correct oil/paper cap for my 50th anniv. 54' from Allessandro so I was really glad Fender did these right. It's a shame Fender is phasing out the AV series for "American originals" the last version of the Av was the best thing Fender has put out IMHO.

My feelings exactly - the last AV series is everything a lover of vintage Strats would want in a new Fender - a shame that it's sundown on them. I have the models I want from the series ('54, '56, '59 maple, '59 rosewood). I wish they would have done an AV '50's Jazzmaster (to match what we hear on the early Ventures lps).

Marty, I just saw something about the Custom shop doing a "vintage custom" 50's Jazzmaster, not sure how vintage accurate this will be.

Thanks for the note. It reminds me of another great period correct advantage of the AV series - no additional stamp on the guitar - no custom shop or master-builder signature on the back of the head stock in particular.
