Marty, Fender switched to the brown tolex with gold interior right about when they switched the maple necks to rosewood. So a 58' through early 59' with maple neck would have this tweed/gold case. The guitar nerd in me wants even the case details to be correct, plus I love the smaller sized vintage cases, the modern ones have inches of extra padding inside, making them bigger all around.

That makes sense about the switch to brown tolex timeline. The AV series uses a smaller case format, it's about a half an inch slimmer and almost an inch less tall than the Fender tweed and tolex cases used in the last few decades. But I see looking at your new case picture what you're talking about. Your new case is even shorter. I just compared an AV tweed case to my original '55 tweed case and the width is the same but I see the ol' '55 case is another inch shorter. I don't know that I'll go as far as a custom case for my AV Strats but I certainly understand your passion. I did have custom cases built for two Mosrite Ventures Model replicas - those required a faux alligator covering.

Marty, who made your custom Mosrite cases? I just had another custom tweed case for my AV 56' with vintage red interior for that year, here is a pic of both cases with fresh coats of clear lacquer. Image

Those cases look fantastic! A company called Cedar Creek made my Mosrite cases. They weren't cheap and took more than a year. I think they were close to 500 clams each. Who made your Fender cases?

Marty I had G&G case co. custom make me these, they have cotton lacquer coated tweed, correct slim profile/smaller size with no extra padding inside like the originals, I had them omit any logos, Fender or G&G, and put the center latch in the correct location inside the handle area, they also have no snap on the side pocket. The turn around was usually only several weeks and cheaper than your Mosrite cases.I have had them custom build a few for me in the last few years, but it was tough to get them to do all the vintage details correct, had to send a few back which is tough to do .These two came out just about exact to 56' and 59' original cases, I just always give them another couple coats of real clear lacquer when I get them, the lacquered tweed they use looks almost untreated when they arrive.

Time well spent IMO. They look very authentic.

I use this lacquer from home depot, use a good 2 and a half inch brush, tape off all leather trim/handles and hardware with blue painters tape.Be sure to do this outside or a well vented place, I wear a good mask also.Brush on even coats until you get a nice smooth coating. This only works on real cotton tweed, that new fake tweed they use is made of plastic and will come out looking like a mess.I also added a few coats to my tweed 63' Reverb unit, it gave it a real nice look.Image

I'd recommend clear shellac over Minwax for this. The reason being that if you bump or scratch lacquers, they tend to turn white. Shellac also partially protects against sunlight bleaching, something Minwax doesn't.

Dilute the shellac with alcohol (50/50 or even 75/25 diluted), and give it lots of coats. It dries much faster than lacquer, so you don't have to wait more than half an hour between coatings.

I used lacquer because that's what the originals were coated with, I've never had any white marks from scuffs or bleaching on the cases I lacquered a few years ago, and they darken and age like the originals.

Thanks for the Lacquer / Shellac info folks. I've done the shellac (aka French polish) treatment to an acoustic guitar I built. It does indeed dry quicker but I think I'll try the lacquer on the Fender G&G tweed cases first. It won't have all the original details of a custom made case but I think the general appearance will be greatly improved towards the classic look. I love the lacquer look on the '57 Twin reissues. -Marty

Marty just be sure your G&G case has real cotton tweed, the normal production tweed cases have a plastic composite tweed material which does not react well to a lacquer treatment. I believe the only recent Fender production tweed case with real tweed was the 60th anniversary 1954 stratocaster center pocket case.

Thanks for the note! I have a couple of the '54 center pocket style so those are to what I'll limit my lacquering. On closer examination, the feel of the tweed on the other G&G tweed cases - including the more recent AV's - is indeed a bit different to the center pocket versions. It's great that Fender went to the trouble of a more correct tweed on the those. They really should have gone all the way and lacquered them as they do with some of the amps.
