Hey thanks for the review of the strats my56strat.
Half price .... what a bargain. Congrats!

As for the neck question I have had the v deluxe which gave me a pain in the thumb after playing for a while. This depends on your playing style e.g. thumb over the top at times.
The AVRI 54 (one of the 1st 54s) I could not bond with. It has a moderate sized neck with certainly more rounded bulk at the back. I sold it though it was a beautiful guitar just not for me.
That flash coat seems to chip pretty easily to.
The 56 neck was great for me and still easily my favourite.
The important thing is you gotta try the necks for yourself.
The differences can be pretty subtle but I find most neck shapes easy to adapt to.
For me it is only one part of the guitar and it is more the sum of factors that determine whether it is a keeper. :D
The '56 is my favorite neck shape as well. The chipping of the flash coat is a feature (tee he he). So is the easily breakable plastic. I've had to Krazy Glue the knobs on my AV '54 several times. These are all features that are to get you to relic-land quicker than usual.

Thanks Marty, it seems most of these have very little red in the burst, and because there are different aspects of each of my 3 that I like, I plan on keeping all of them, but I get the feeling the 59' is going to get a lot of playing time. The one thing I've noticed about the new AVRI series is the neck tint, or lack there of varies quite a bit, I prefer no tint as the originals came, and let them age on their own, both my 56' and 59' have very white maple necks. Do you find that you prefer the maple neck 59' over your rosewood 59'? I find over the years I just prefer maple visually and for the feel.

What a beauty! But now the question becomes...Are you going to have to change your handle to my59strat?

Ha! no I actually used my56strat for many years, back when I had a vintage 1956 hardtail. I sold it many years ago, it was a refin. with a few replacement parts, and not nearly as good as the strats I have now.Plus the AVRI 56' I have isn't going anywhere. Here is a pic. of the vintage hardtail.Image

Pretty sweet looking Strat, and the refin looks pretty damn good!

I believe Lays guitar shop did it for me , nice job, but it had neck issues and the strats I had at the time were just better, on a good note I sold it when even refins were getting stupid money, so it worked out fine. :D

Indeed, my AV '59 is among those that have very little red in the burst - it really appears as the earlier tobacco burst and is hard to tell that there is any red in it at all. You definitely have the winner - it really looks like what was out in '59. I do prefer the maple neck in terms of feel on the AV '59. It is so well rounded at the edges. The rosewood AV'59 neck is more square at the edges. I also had to have Fender replace the rosewood neck as there was a goodly bow in the neck with the tightness in the truss rod max'd out. It took two months to get the guitar back with a replacement neck. The replacement is quite right and the set up is excellent but the maple neck is more comfortable. In terms of appearance, ya gotta have maple on a sunburst, IMHO. A maple neck was a signature feature of the Strat. Not many guitars had that in the '50's, certainly not the major competitor. I do like the rosewood on the sonic blue body just 'cause I've had a foldout poster from a guitar magazine hanging in my closet for many years showing a vintage '63 Strat with that configuration. I'm also very impressed that Fender goes to the detail of putting the clay dots in the necks of the rosewood AV '59. That was a big complaint for me that they didn't do that with other Fender revisits of their early '60's guitars.

I like the un-tinted necks for the same reason - certainly if you're buying a NOS type guitar. In honor of this and other attention to original details, I don't think of the post 2012 series as AVRI. You'll notice I refer to them as simply AV (e.g. AV'56, AV'54, etc...). This is to distinguish the newer series from the earlier series which didn't go as far in terms of vintage details. It's also the way Fender refers to them - The American Vintage series. I think of the newer series not as reissues but as guitars made in ignorance of the so-called "improvements" of the past few decades. Leo made 'em right the first time and these are just being made that same way.

You are correct Marty, I should refer to this new series as AV, as they are in a whole different league as the previous reissues, I owned a few from the 80's and 90's and IMO were nothing like these. If you prefer vintage specs there is no reason to go CS, I've played several of these and they are better and more correct than the bunch of CS reissues I've owned and sold off in the past. I almost went for the Astec gold AV 59' but am really glad I chose the 3 tone instead.I have to say even though I'm not a rosewood guy, that sonic blue 59' really looks great. Any chance you could take a group shot of all your strats Marty? you certainly have a bunch!

Here's the '59's of which we're primarily speaking in this thread. I tried to take pictures of the '56's (AV'56, Time Machine Closet Classic and Time Machine Series Relic in Fiesta Red) and '54's but they came out very grainy because I thought I'd turn off the flash - that was a mistake. However, the Fiesta Red Time Machine Relic and Sunburst Time Machine Closet Classic can be seen at http://planktones.com/page6.html. The '54's are featured in the video you've seen me post in at least one other thread at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QqVctGhDPo -Marty Image

They look great Marty, the sonic blue is really nice.I see what you mean, the 3 tone 59' really does look more like a 2 tone in that pic, did those Fender booklets come with yours? if so I didn't receive one.

Yeah, I'd prefer the '59 to have more red but I got this one cheap as well - it was used but in new condition. The Fender catalogs are reprints I found on Ebay and did not come with the other cool case candy (one of my fav features of the newer AV series). The catalogs don't fit in the case pocket so they are on display.

Quick update, I've had the AV 59' for close to 2 months and really love this strat, the pickups are my favorite feature! I like this one so much I had a custom case made, real lacquered tweed, smaller sized , center latch is between the handle, with all the features an early 59' maple neck's case would have, here's a couple pics.Image

Inside pic, an early 59' should have a tweed case with the gold interior like this on the right, I had them make a correct red lined case for my blonde 56' on left.Image

Ya gotta stop showing that guitar - the red in the burst makes me jealous every time! It's very cool that you got a lacquered tweed case. I've wanted to do that with my AV '50's cases but haven't yet. When you say an early '59 should have the tweed case, is this to say all sunburst '59's had the tweed case? -Marty

Marty, Fender switched to the brown tolex with gold interior right about when they switched the maple necks to rosewood. So a 58' through early 59' with maple neck would have this tweed/gold case. The guitar nerd in me wants even the case details to be correct, plus I love the smaller sized vintage cases, the modern ones have inches of extra padding inside, making them bigger all around.
