Really couldn't justify adding another strat, but could not pass up the deal on this brand new 59' AVRI.Picked it up for about half price, light weight nice feel.I already have a AVRI 56' in blonde and a 50th anniv. 54', both ash bodies, so I wanted a alder 3 tone burst. I am still tweaking the set up, and will post after running it through the amps and doing a comparison with the 54' and 56'.Image

In for the '54 comparison. I got my eye on a '54 AVRI locally so I'm really interested in your comparison with that guitar.

Ok, had my guitar buddy come over and we put the 3 strats to the test.I have been a ash/ fat maple neck Fender guy for years, but we were both surprised the 59' won on all counts, we both really liked the slightly slimmer neck shape(still nice and full), and the alder 59' had the best tone of the 3, clear, glassy, punchy, just sounded more like how a strat should sound to my ear. The 56' came in second to me, 3rd to my friend, the 54' was very different, lowest output in pickups, the 54's had a fatter tone, but not as stratty as I would like.Over all I had my doubts I would even like the 59', now it looks like it will become my favorite strat.Image

One more comment, IMHO Fender hit it on the head with this new AVRI series, this 59' cost me a fraction of what I paid for my 50th anniversary 54' and beat it hands down for both of us, and the 54' is an awesome guitar by all rights.Image

Well, that's no good. ;) I had my heart set on the '54.

Thanks for the follow up and thanks for the review. I'm going to try to find a '59 before I make a decision. I've got a feeling you can't go wrong with any of the guitars reviewed.

EDIT: Can you speak more about the differences in neck between '54 and '59? The "slim-profile, "D"-shaped profile of the '59 has me a bit concerned given what I really liked about the '54 was fat "U"-profile neck.

Hey dpe94.

Give the '56 a try if you can. It is a soft v neck but a very thick soft v. You may like it.

dpe94, keep in mind, my 54 is a masterbuilt 50th 54' not the 60th AVRI 54'.I personally love the new AVRI series and tried a few different models the day I bought my 56' new in a store(couple years ago)and I was there to try a 60th 54' not the 56' I walked out with, it just spoke to me.The 59' I bought online because of the great deal I was given. Every one of the new AVRI's I tried at the store were really good, and don't get me wrong my 54' and 56' are really great strats, just for the two of us testing them side by side we prefered the 59'.I know it's not easy to find a local store that carries a couple of these, but if you can try a few, everyones taste is different, and there are differences between one guitar and another. The 59' I got is an exceptional one, you might play 5 other 59's that are good/bad, or great. Try that 54' locally, it might be a really great one. If you find one that fits you the new AVRI series are the best Fender offers IMHO.

I have a 2005 American Deluxe Stratocaster with "V"-neck. I thought I loved that neck until I played the '54 with it's fat-"U". I like the "V" profile better than "U", but fat necks suit my very large hands better. I would want a fat-"V".

Any idea how the '56 compares to my 2005 Am. Dlx. "V"-profile?

Good point! I was looking at the 60th '54 AVRI. I completely overlooked yours was the 50th. I agree, the AVRI/AV are terrific guitars.

I don't think I could go wrong with any of the AVRI's.

I have two AV '59's - the rosewood and the maple. I also have three '54's - the 50th Anniversary MB, the AV 60th Anniversary, and the heavy relic 60th anniversary. My preference is far and away for the '54's in terms of feel. However, that has to do with my playing style and the size of my hands - i.e. it's a highly subjective matter. If you like the fat U, that's the one you should have as the D of the '59 has significantly less thickness in it's profile. I play primarily fingerstyle (ala Chet) with my thumb wrapped around the neck almost constantly. If I were a shredder doing a lot of bar chords - in no way could I recommend the '54. In terms of tone, the '54's have the lower output pickups theoretically providing more of the sound of the strings BUT the '59's output is not much higher. It wasn't as easy for me to any difference in the tones between '54's and '59's.

Which of the '54's do I prefer? The heavy relic. Why? Because of the worn neck - it is amazingly smooth and comfortable. There is no discernible difference in the profile of the three '54 necks. They seem to all be modeled after the same October '54 neck. The heavy relic does have the 9.5" radius - flatter than the 7.5" radius of the other two.

What about the '59's - rosewood vs. maple? They are both fantastic guitars. The rosewood is the sonic blue. I love the appearance of that color with the dark neck. The maple I had to have because it is the one the Ventures played on their early albums. I hear no difference in tone between the rosewood and maple necks. The rosewood does not have a "darker" tone nor does it have a "thicker" tone due to it's slab board. Note also that the thicker necks of the '54's don't result in a "thicker" tone.

Other details of the AV series that started post 2012 is that - at least with the 50's models - the caps are the original paper and oil. I'm impressed with that as they didn't do that even with the MB 50th Anniversary '54. The cases are thinner by about a half an inch - with the exception of the '54 60th which has a center-pocket case thicker than any of the Fender tweed cases - and no 60th Anniversary embroidery as they did with the commemorative case. Don't use the serial number to determine the date of a used one. The dates are penciled on the heal of the neck as they were in the '50's. They have the pat pend saddles and the spaghetti logos. However, ALL reissue Fender spaghetti logos have a font that differs slightly from the actual 50's logos (it can be seen in the "e" which is not rounded off on original logos). The font for the word "tremolo" on the neck decal is also slightly different from the actual '50's logo. I believe the font for "pat. pend." on the saddles is also slightly different. The pickup covers of the '54's have rounded edges. This is not period correct. The original '54 pickup covers were just a flat as the ones we see today but they rounded over time due to the type of plastic they used in '54 and '55. The rounding was not nearly as nice and uniform and machine perfect as the reissue covers. The knobs on the '54's are the miniskirt style of the original '54 knobs and the plastic used is a brittle type - not actually bakelite but similar.

Hey thanks for the review of the strats my56strat.
Half price .... what a bargain. Congrats!

As for the neck question I have had the v deluxe which gave me a pain in the thumb after playing for a while. This depends on your playing style e.g. thumb over the top at times.
The AVRI 54 (one of the 1st 54s) I could not bond with. It has a moderate sized neck with certainly more rounded bulk at the back. I sold it though it was a beautiful guitar just not for me.
That flash coat seems to chip pretty easily to.
The 56 neck was great for me and still easily my favourite.
The important thing is you gotta try the necks for yourself.
The differences can be pretty subtle but I find most neck shapes easy to adapt to.
For me it is only one part of the guitar and it is more the sum of factors that determine whether it is a keeper. :D

Very nice! Yours has better red in the burst than mine.
