I don't appreciate the relic approach, but to each his own. However, if someone must go down that road at least they should make an effort to make it as authentic as possible. The guitar posted by the op doesn't look aged....it looks pristine other than the gashes and gouges....and therefore ridiculous!

What a shame.

As ugly as that is, I bet it still plays and sounds fine. If he's selling it cheap enough, somebody can still get a good deal. He'd probably find the price I'd offer insulting, though. Especially after all the "hard work" put into the "custom relic" job.

Pretty much spot on. It would be a great buy at a couple of hundred quid. And there is something quite liberating about having a battered instrument; you just enjoy wringing the living daylights out of it rather than worrying about it getting scratched.

The original owner who ruined this strat is not selling it, a store is and the price they are asking is WAY too high, I would like to buy if for the neck, sell the rest of the parts(use the body for firewood)but like you, my offer would insult them I'm sure.

Did the store buy it or are they selling it on behalf of the owner? Not that it really matters aside, if the store bought it, they obviously considered there was money to be made despite the vandalism.

If the store bought it I'd love to know what they gave for it...!

Since it has come to light the vendor is a store, it comes to mind this could possibly be an item damaged during shipping and someone got the bright idea to sell it as a relic rather than take a hit on the price.
I suspect it possible they decided to try, in part to see if it would sell on that premise, in part just for kicks.
I envision the sale is an amateur experiment in merchandising.

The other side of this coin is that it could be legitimate play damage.
I once sold a very special Telecaster to a young and bright rising star as his first pro-grade guitar and he has since beaten it to a pulp.
It looks in many ways quite similar to this guitar.
The neck has relatively little play wear but there are huge dings and chips all over it.
Some of them are quite deep, almost as if someone took the pointed end of a welder's chipping hammer to it.
He says they all happened on stage while running and jumping and being otherwise flamboyant, crashing into mic stands, drum kits, etc.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
