Just looking through some 60th anniversary 54's for sale and came across this sad sight! I just don't get it! why would someone do this? these have very thin lacquer finishes, they will age quickly on their own.Shame IMHO.Image

That is hideous and such a waste of a good guitfiddle!

I'm all for relicing personally, I think it can look really nice when done well. But it looks like this guy didn't even use any reference photos, or even know what relicing was. It looks like he heard vaguely about it once while a bit drunk, and then 3 years later decided to give it a try.

No two ways about it......the miscreant who committed that atrocity is an "alpha hotel" of the first order.

I will never understand what makes people do this kind of thing  , these look like gouges in the wood, not even just finish chips.

The guy probably bought it, thought relicing it would look cool, went too far, messed up and tried to cut his losses selling it on so he could try again. I hope not. I weep for any future guitars he may get his hands on!!

Why would someone take what appears to be a brand new guitar and completely "F" it up like that? Those are not cheap guitars, and all the person did was drive Down the value! As Red Foreman used to say...."Dumbazz"!

The reason I love the new AVRI series is because they look , feel, sound and wear just like the originals, all he had to do was PLAY this strat and it would wear in just like an original 54', instead he turned it into garbage even he no longer wanted.

The damage is so significant, deep and repeated that it would be very difficult to even accommodate it in a heavy relic. To my mind the damage on a relic should tell a story (even if the story is made up). You should be able to understand how the damage occurred .... the previous owner used a sixpence as a pick ....the guitar as hit by a flying bottle in a bar fight in ....etc. etc. With such stories in mind you could potentially work in damage that doesn't initially look authentic, but I really can't see how you would do it on that now. What a complete Muppet.

The only way forward for that body now would be to strip, fill and repaint it, and it isn't worth it. Ignoring how filling a body may or may not impact on it's tone... Whether you believe in "tonewood" or not I can't see that clarting a body up with filler is going to improve it.

The guitar would have to be cheap enough that you could factor in buying a replacement body as that is pretty much firewood now.

His wife was pissed when she found out he bought it, then she took a hammer to it, and the dude is trying to pass it off as a "road worn"---LOL! That's the scenario I picture.

I first thought it was not relic intentionally but used as a shield when the spouse got pissed and started throwing things at him as the cuts look very deep
