Maybe it's just me, but where are the american-made, non-$3000 strats with a decently thick neck and bigger frets with multiple color options? Now the "Mod-Shop" gives you no neck options. Is the only option to buy parts and make a parts caster these days??

That's the road I took. All it takes is some common hand tools, a basic understanding of how to plan the instrument out, and a properly-inspired DIY attitude.

I agree entirely. Even using all Fender parts (if you buy with care) you can mix and match yourself a cracking guitar.

Or get one that is close to what you want (at sensible money) and swap over the bit you aren't happy with. You can then sell the spare bit and shouldn't be too much out of pocket.

I was hoping Fender would expand their American Design Experience options (more colors, neck options, etc.). Instead they eliminate the Am. Design Experience and create the Mod Shop. A huge step in the wrong direction IMO.

It isn't the first and it certainly won't be the last.

Yeah. I'm not sure why the American Design Experience went away, only to be replaced with the Mod Shop. The Mod Shop is basically the same concept. All they needed to do was add Daphne Blue (which was a plus for me, as it's the color I most want on a strat behind Sea Foam Green) and Surf Green, because those appear to be the only two additions to the lineup that weren't present with the ADE, but instead we lost numerous neck, bridge/tremolo, and pickup options.

Now, seeing as I rather like the American Standard specs and just wanted different finish options, I'm still pretty much set, but I'll miss the choice of adding Fat 50s.

Even so, I'm glad they offer a service like this, and truth be told, I'm fine with the fewer neck choices. If I could add only a few more things, I'd make the Fat 50s and option and throw in a few more colors, but for all intents and purposes, I do like this.

There seem to be many more neck options in the MIM line up than the MIA.

In the main Fender shop, I count exactly two MIM models and zero MIA models with a U neck. And one of them is the Ritchie Blackmore strat, which is only chunky on one side, so to speak :)

Custom Shop might have some, but these days, all they seem to send to stores are battered models.

In the various series of MIM strats the neck shapes include; soft v, thick oval, thick c, and U. All at reasonable prices. You don't get those kinds of choices in MIA unless you are prepared to invest much more money.

Arjay's suggestion is probably the best....build your own, or perhaps change just the neck on a model you like.

Having paid little attention to the catalogue for a few years, I took a look earlier this week.
I dunno what's gone wrong with Fender. It's uninspiring to say the least. All the designs seem to be more of the same. Some of the colour choices are truly grotesque and the hardware choices seem to offer very little variation. On US made guitars.
