Just saw all the you tube clips on guitar world magazine. Ritchie's still got it. Looks like he's playing his old strat. Anyone know what his rig is?

Only if he stopped smashing them up. Strats didn't have an extended life expectancy in Richies hands, back in the day.

The Strat he's playing looks to be the second one he shows in this video

Amps these days are usually ENGL

What was that tape reel machine he had sitting on an amp off to the right side? I've never seen that before.

He's giving the people what they want.

Even though I didn't like most of Blackmore's Night--some songs were good.

And they have a following.

So if he wants to go back to that later--good for him, if he wants to keep doing Rainbow --fine.

his choice.

I'll have to check out the videos

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that RB used a tape recorder as a pre-amp/boost but can't remember where!

The really weird thing is that Blackmore was working with Coverdale to do a Rainbow/Purple thing, then that fell apart resulting in Coverdale releasing the recent Whitesnake "Purple" album (a re-do of Coverdale's Deep Purple stuff) which included a U.S. tour to support it. Blackmore was also having similar conversations with Joe Lynn Turner (one of the former Rainbow vocalists) and that fell through too. My guess is that Blackmore did not want to give up the larger financial share that Coverdale or Turner would get.

But can it really sound like Rainbow without Ronnie James Dio? Not to me it don't. Glad Ritchie Blackmore is still out there playing his behind off though.

Yea, I'm with ya there, except it really depends on what Rainbow "era" you're going for thought doesn't it?

Early stuff, yep Dio... I liked the albums with Joe Lynn Turner doing the vocals too (Straight Between the Eyes, Bent Out OF Shape..)

it's kind of like Deep Purple with out Blackmore,, - that's NOT Deep Purple..

I agree ... You did not mention Rainbow's Graham Bonnet-led 'Down To Earth' album which followed the Dio era. Assuming your omission was intentional, I was not a big fan of this album either. Ironically, though, this album spawned two notable commercial radio hits which was a fairly new thing for Blackmore at the time ("Since You Have Been Gone" and "All Night Long"). The Dio-era tracks "Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Long Live Rock and Roll" did see some airtime, but not nearly as much. It was likely because of that radio success with Bonnet that he went with the more commercially directed Joe Lynn Turner.
