One of my HH Strats has the JB/Jazz p/up combo, and I haven't been impressed by the Jazz, so I'm replacing it with an SH-6N (Distortion) which has more output and mids. I'm looking for more clarity from the neck when using distortion (I don't really use this guitar for clean) and we'll see how it turns out!

I usually just have a 3-way switch with the basic sounds, but I've decided to try a super-switch and some in-between sounds. My questions are...

1. The Big Apple wiring diagram is a PDF from Fender, named 'BIG APPLE STRATOCASTER 0107200/7202'. I don't think I can reproduce it here as a picture, but it doesn't show all the wires as per the SD p/ups. Can anyone confirm that all the 'unshown' wires go to earth, please? Seems logical...?

2. I've also printed off another wiring diagram with this setup:

1. Bridge Series Humbucker
2. Bridge Single Coil (North)
3. Bridge(N) + Neck(S)
4. Neck Single Coil (North)
5. Neck Series Humbucker

Anyone tried this? I fancy the S/C sound on positions 2 & 4 but I'm wondering if the volume drop might be a bit much?

3. I see there's a whole range of setups you can do with a super-switch, so even though I think I mostly fancy the Big Apple (Fender usually gets it right!), anyone tried any others that were good?

Thanks - Peter.

Yes, that's the diagram, thanks.

As I said, I'm talking about all the pickup wires not shown. IE: On SD p/ups there are red/green/black/white/earth. Several of these are not shown on the diagram and I'm asking whether they're all earthed?

Cheers - Peter.

On the Fender diagram if we look for the neck pu ;

I see black and green (solder to the same switch contact) and white wire going to the switch .
Ground look to be a shielded or bare wire and a 4th wire from this pu and they are solder to the back of a pot.

Is this help you ?

Yes, I see what you mean, Stratele52. So the 4th wire must be the red, paired with the earth (bare) wire? Yes, I think you're right - thanks! Pity they didn't just add that info on the diagram, though!

I think that SD diagram uses an ordinary 5-way for a coil tap and I'm really looking for the extra options you get with a super-switch. I have the new p/up, just waiting for the super-switch. If no-one comes up with any tried-and-tested alternatives, I expect I'll do the Big Apple setup and see what I think!

Appreciate most Strat users prefer SSS - as do I - so I'm not expecting a deluge of replies!

Thanks for your help, mate, and don't let me stop you working! Cheers - Peter.

A red wire on Fender pu or on SD pu ?

When I did my HH Frankenstrat, I went with single volume and single tone knobs with the tone knob having a push/pull to put the pup selected into single coil when 'up'. There is a third knob for "normal appearances" but it is non-functional. I worked with someone else to help me on the wiring so I don't have the diagram.

Thanks mate. I was quite surprised no-one else had any views to share!

I tried the Big Apple wiring but - although I'm sure I got it right! - it didn't sound good to me. In the finish I just used the superswitch to simply tap a coil in positions 2 & 4. Yes, there's a volume drop, but I'm finding that's actually quite useful.

Cheers - Peter.
