Thanks again for your comments chaps. I am loving the guitar and it makes me smile every time I walk in the room.

The freezer failure is frustrating me though so I may yet try spray air freezing. I tried it with the original finish and, if it did anything at all, the result was very subtle. It might work better with new paint or might do nothing.

Leave it as is. It looks great with subtle wear. Much better than the previous version. I'm not sure what's so special about freezer burn. That's usually something I try to avoid. :)

Rapid and repeated swings in ambient temperature produce near-microscopic fissures (known as "lacquer checkering") to a guitar body's finish, a phenomenon generally seen with older instruments. Performed correctly under controlled conditions the effect can be quite convincing.

I'm not sure which is the more difficult, getting the lacquer to craze or getting a photo of it.

So far- one night in a freezer, two cans of plumbers pipe freeze, variously placed ice cubes and ice tray. These variously applied on different days.

I'm not convinced the night in the freezer achieved very much but as the checking becomes more apparent with each subsequent treatment it is obviously a cumulative thing.

The pipe freeze seems the most effective though. On the plus side, it is the easiest to apply and the most controllable as far as area is concerned. On the down side, at around £10 a can, it is also the most expensive.

It is a little frustrating at the moment though as, after freezing, it looks awesome. Once the surface returns to ambient temperature you have to start looking hard for the effect. A couple more cans of pipe freeze should see me good though.

What brand of lacquer did you use?

Nitrocellulose aerosols from two different UK luthier suppliers. Why? Is brand important?

It very well could be, John. Different manufacturers may use different formulations in their paints. For consistency, stick with a single brand/type for your *next* project.

I think you are a bit on the edge using aerosols anyway. I wasn't expecting to achieve a perfect finish and my made up "Story" was able to accommodate this.

I had "issues" with both suppliers (see "The arrogance of some suppliers" thread) and would probably look elsewhere if I were to do it again.

On the plus side, assuming you use the same type of paint, there doesn't seem to be any compatability issues between manufacturers. That is perhaps the nature of the material. I must admit, back in the day, when repairing cars, I used all manner of different cans/brands which (aside there being 100 shades of black) never caused an issue.

It comes down to getting a good product/supplier and that is the luck of the draw for a one off project as you don't have any previous point of reference.

While you can sand it all down and start again, if it goes wrong, the drying time on nitro makes this a bit onerous for a guitar you want to use. This being the case I'm not sure I would look towards nitro aerosols if you wanted a perfect finish. There are too many variables stacked against you with mix, delivery pressure and spray pattern all being something of a lottery.

A perfect finish wasn't important to me for Odee. I am not sure it would necessarily be critical on any of my music making tools assuming the finish didn't annoy me.

Odee was great in so far as it was a good base guitar that had been vandalised. If another became available I might well have another go. Finding a worthwhile patient isn't that easy though as most Ebay "Heavy Relic" vandalised abortions are completely inappropriate as a basis for a story. How can you have an old battered guitar with a two post trem and a poly finish? The story fails straight away.

+1

Along with 22 frets, locking tuners, and a roller nut.

"No kidding, guys......I've owned this guitar since my days with Herman's Hermits."
