Tinted lacquer and clear coat now done.

The clear coat was a pain as it decided to spray solvent rather than lacquer at one point, despite being well shaken. Still, it'll look older and less pristine that way.

Now I have to sit on my hands for three weeks before I can cut it back and buff it...and then put it in the freezer.

That's pretty convincing.

I'm eager to see it after its "trek" to Antarctica.

Okay, I'll bite. Why does it go in the freezer?

Freezing the body will cause the final finish coat to fracture, leaving random, faint lines which are in reality microscopic fissures that usually occur naturally as a vintage guitar ages. This process is routinely used by custom luthiers on new instruments to simulate the finish of a genuine relic.

Really nice work from a spray can. Nice differentiation under the guard.

Thanks for your comments chaps. Waiting before I can cut and buff is driving me mad so I had to buy some Kluson SD9105MN tuners to keep me amused. :-)

I'm not convinced a numbered neck plate wont become part of the mix either.

So the sunburst's still under the blue, is it, John (albeit somewhat rubbed down, of course)? Is the plan still to sand through the blue to let the burst show a bit?

Whatever, it's certainly looking good so far! Second pic looks very much like my sonic blue nitro refinished Plus, actually. Bit paler than Daphne? Or is it just the light/angle etc?

Sounds like you're having fun with it!

Cheers - Peter.

I used 800 grit just to take the gloss off the sunburst (or what was left of it after the previous vandal had been to town). I then applied a white primer as I was concerned how the blue would take on the areas of exposed wood. The white was de-nibbed prior to Daphne Blue and then tinted and clear lacquer coats.

Of the photos above the second one looks perhaps closest to the colour in the flesh. It is pretty bizarre as the middle section was masked (with an old Pick Guard) so should look exactly the same colour as the top picture.

I haven't decided how much blue to remove when I start buffing it down. With so much sunburst having been removed previously I don't think I'll be able to expose it effectively without it looking contrived, but I will see how it looks once I start.

It is really difficult to find pictures of authentic old guitars to copy as almost every aged guitar on the internet is actually faked (says he about to do the same thing - but I was forced into it).

I'm looking to create a guitar which I might have bought 2nd hand 40ish years ago. The original owner (a semi star of the Sixties) treated the guitar with very little respect, if indeed he was even aware of it half of the time. After some years of abuse he gave the guitar to a roadie who, having fallen on hard times, sprayed it Daphne Blue to try to make it look respectable and sold it to a local music shop.

As a young guitarist looking for his first electric I obviously couldn't afford a new guitar but this sorry looking example could perhaps have been within my price range. I actually bought a Rose-Morris Avon SG copy but had things been different...Thus in my very early teens, still at school and in various bands and the like (how did we have the nerve to stand up in front of people back then when we were sooo bad) Odee would have seen plenty of action and, although treated with care, accidents will happen. Damage is inevitable when a guitar is carried to and from school in every weather imaginable and then left in the corner of the music room store all day ready for practice at lunch time or after school.

So Odee would have seen quite a hard life. Inevitably proper work, family, house etc would have seen him relegated to the loft/attic for twenty years to enjoy the heat of the sun in summer and the cold and damp of winter. Fifteen or so years ago he was rediscovered and since played almost daily. Some occasional gigging but, on the whole, just solid noodling and home use.

A reasonably believable story perhaps which explains why the guitar is painted over previous damage. Had the guitar been refinished by the importer (as a great many were) all the damage would be on top of the blue. Had the guitar been refinished professionally, after a period of time, it would have been sanded down and filled etc to look as pristine as possible.

It's those little details that make for an authentic replica......

Indeed. I had already fitted Patt Pending Saddles, and an aluminium pick guard shield, cloth wiring, OiP cap. I even have a selector switch with a spring to replace the previously replaced Oak Gigsby - granted it is a five position not three but there is art and there is practicality. And the hand wound 60's replica PUPS.

A numbered heel plate would be cool and has received some serious consideration. The thing is you have to draw a line somewhere. I have still spent less than 1/3 the price of an AVRI in the UK so I am very pleased with the result for the money also considering it has a number of authentic features not on the AVRI.

That's been my observation and experience as well (probably something that FMIC would prefer not to hear though).

I use the five-way switch for all of my builds. It's virtually indistinguishable from a 3-way and the visual vibe remains undisturbed.

I'm really looking forward to Odee's coming-out ceremony.

Klusons fitted to neck and a neck plate with numbers has arrived.

I had a bit of luck with the Klusons as, while they wouldn't fit through the original ferrules, I had exactly the right size drill file to open them up - that almost never happens.

I now need to order some more hydrogen peroxide as the remnants of my original bottle seems to have lost its bite.
