I fancy modding up my 1988/89 Made In Japan Strat (serial H004378, should that help).

Initially I was interested in locking tuners, but there's nothing really wrong with my existing tuners, at least as far as I know.

In contrast, the bridge and saddles are looking old and crusty, even outright rusty in places, so I'm looking at that instead.

Now, I understand that the saddles width on (much) older guitars are 2 7/32", as opposed to the more modern/common 2 1/16", but mine is 2 1/8" (or 2 2/16", if you like!). That's measuring from the middle of the two outer saddle screws.

I doubt that it matters, and that a 2 1/16" saddle will be fine, but I'd like to hear your thoughts, folks, and perhaps also why my saddle isn't a standard width!

IIRC the US vintage reissue saddles stamped with the double "Fender" will fit your bridge. If the block is not a steel one, you might want to swap that out as well as it will increase your sustain.

Thank you.

The block is obviously made of metal but I've no idea what sort of metal. How can I tell?

With a magnet.
If it's ferrous metal a magnet will stick to it, and steel is a ferrous metal.

Good thinking, Batman.

Holy cheap components! It's a non-ferrous metal! I suspect it's zinc.

(Kudos also to my wife, for testing the block for me while I'm at work)

It's probably HMA (high mass alloy), which does have zinc as one of its component metals.
