How about a roadworn one? I've got one on my 60s

You are a bad person showing me all these corroded gems. I shouldn't have bought the guitar in the first place and already I'm running up a shopping list of replacement parts. I'm also ordering hydrogen peroxide to make up a fast rusting solution.

I would urge restraint......you don't want to end up with something that looks like an artifact recovered from the Titanic.

I am my own worst enemy. Having posted that, I realised my recently purchased MIM Classic 70s only had a zinc block. I have just ordered their 'new' one

Another £27.49 bites the dust.

Under normal circumstances I would agree but unfortunately the body has already been molested (badly) to such a point that the only way forward is either a respray or to take it further to disguise the unconsidered damage already applied. It's a bit like a programme we have in the UK called "Tattoo Fixers", I'm going to have to apply more damage to disguise the current damage. I'm not saying I'm going to have to go full on "Rory" but certainly it ain't going to be pretty and, as such, a bit of rust here and there is going to be des rigure.

To some degree I am using my original Strat as a reference. It has a black, almost unmarked, body but the rest has yellowed, got dirt, rust, crud and all types of unpleasantness. In many respects I am a bit disappointed the original body has stood up so well. It looks almost new compared to the rest of the guitar.

While tempted to swap over the full on authentic relic scratch plate from my original it would be like putting a faithful friend to sleep and not going to happen.

I'm waiting for the guitars imminent arrival and am already thinking I was caught up in the eBay fever of the moment and am regretting it. I am hopping it isn't as bad as as I think it is but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm in complete sympathy.

So long as the feigned "damage" is consistent throughout the instrument, you should arrive at something near authentic. I've always been a proponent of the "less is more" theory but you have to integrate components from differing sources and levels of wear. I shall watch your endeavors with interest.

Can't wait to see photos, John!

Know what you mean re the relic 'itch'. Fortunately I have a couple of nitro Strats and the bodies are getting slightly reliced without any active assistance from myself!

Cheers - Peter.

While I am not into the whole relics thing that is one fine looking guitar. Intriguing to have a guitar you don't have to worry about getting a ding in. I always wondered how do you know you're buying a mint condition one when buying used? T2

I've just accidentally bought one on ebay. It was buy it now or make an offer, so I did.

The previous owner made an effort at a heavy relic which seems, from the pictures, to have involved rubbing it a bit with medium sandpaper. I'm still waiting for its arrival but hope I can manage to get it to something a little more authentic.

I'll admit to having a relic itch I've wanted to scratch for a bit now so, hopefully, this will get it out of my system.

I had that same "itch" John ... unfortunately or not ... while contemplating a new Strat Build

Like T2 ... I give Shimmilou's Black Sweetwater 2 thumbs up ... looks like an ext light relic

I wanted "to have a guitar you don't have to worry about getting a ding in" - T2

... the answer is GRRREAT ...

Not if ... but when it gets a ding on the neck or body ... No Problem : )

It's Fugly ... but it plays beautifully ... and it's on the "at hand" stand now.

To me, that's the only valid way of relic'ing an instrument. Playing it honestly.

That's a valid point .. the best relics are time pieces .. or Custom Shop!

I'm too old to see the fruits of that labor .. but I did a build with honest play wear in mind

Clapton neck w/ 12 years of play and a fresh re-fret .. the body is Ash w/2t burst Nitro finish .. Clapton electronics and P/P Tone Knob for Bridge pup On ..

Keen eyes will see a 2 post bridge .. design for '14 Fender Vintage Hot Rod 50's series .. more to your liking?

I loved my Road Worn '50's Strat. The feel of the neck was fantastic. I only sold it recently when I got an actual '55 Strat. -Marty
