I only ever played acoustic (and was never that excited by it). Never thought I'd own an electric guitar as I figured you first had to be a good acoustic player. Anyway, was killing time when I walked into my first and only pawn shop. Owner had a Squier Bullet and Roland Cube 15X for a killer price. Decided what the heck right there and then.

Took the stuff home and couldn't believe how much fun it was. Then I bought a 2016 Fender Strat in Cherry Burst and then recently a 2001 Fender Strat with dual humbuckers. Man I'm enjoying this!

I've since taken the Squier apart to clean it up, replace the strings, adjust the bow, intonation and action. Plays really well but I'm preferring my 2016 at the moment. Love the colour and the sounds from the HSS configuration.

I had an '81 Morocco Red Strat back in the day. It weighed a ton and I really struggled with bends on it - seemed to take a lot of effort and I was always running into the next string. It didn't even sound particularly Stratty - no doubt the replacement bridge pickup (from EMG's budget range) wasn't helping. This was all very frustrating as a lot of my favourite players - Knopfler in particular - were Strat players and I always loved the classic Strat tone. It was a merciful release when I eventually had to sell it to finance a cruise ship holiday with She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Enter the Elite Strat. The compound fingerboard and neck, the better-than-standard trem, the noiseless pickups, the beautiful finish... too much to resist. My Tobacco sunburst model arrived yesterday... couldn't be happier.

I had an American Standard Stratocaster back in like 1992. It was a popular model in the music I liked, or at least with several bands I liked. It remember that it played well, and sounded wonderful even on the small solid state amp I had back then.

Since then I've had other Fenders. First, it was one of the Jazzmaster reissues done about 1993. Then I sold that and bought a 1982 American Telecaster, which I kept and played for more than 10 years. I sold that Tele (in still great working order) and bought an American Vintage 1961 Telecaster Thinline, as a replacement, which I love.

At this point, I'm considering adding another guitar to my collection (which, besides the Thinline Tele, also includes a 1962 Gretsch Clipper). And, one of the models I'm considering is the Strat.

The reason I'm considering a Strat, is because I would like something that does harder rock and metal, a bit better. Actually, if I run the Thinline Telecaster through a MXR Fullbore Metal pedal, and use the bridge pickup, it does really well. But, I want something that is a little better suited for hard stuff.

Of course, Fender has had the HSS Strats for years, in several variations. Now they even have the matched Shawbucker Strat (American Professional), which does some really interesting new things with the pickup selector switch in positions Two and Four.

If Fender would come out with a HH dual Shawbucker American Deluxe Strat, I would buy one in an instant. I prefer regular single coils, expecially V-mods, to noiseless pickups. So, I would rather have dual Shawbuckers than HSS with noiseless in the middle and neck positions. And I love how the American Deluxes in 2015 had a roller nut and locking tuners, making the Strat "trem" useful for more than just surf rock-ish articulation. Also, they had a Mahogany body option. All that with the "Passing Lane" bypass, would make the Strat the most serious player among American-made metal guitars.

I don't think think the American Professional Telecaster Deluxe is quite what I want for modern metal-y sounds. Although, I'm sure it could do punk rock and jazz exceptionally well! And it could do classic metal. The string-through-body design and alder body probably wouldn't get me quite to where I want to be for newer hard stuff. The American Professional Strat in HSS or HH, has a better bridge for what I want, not to mention a tremolo that could be useful, albeit somewhat rarely.

Provided the routing's right, it's quite easy to convert to HH. I have 2 x 2006 AmStds (as photo) with HH setups. I just bought a couple of suitable WD scratchplates, 3-way switches, 500 ohm pots, and wired them up.

Pickup-wise (all SD's), the sunburst has Pearly Gates in the bridge, and Jazz (bridge model) in the neck. Sounds fatter but unmistakably Stratty. The white one has a JB in the bridge and SH-6n in the neck. Bit more of an animal for when you want that! They both have Sperzel lockers, and I find the standard nut fine (with a spot of 3-in-1 oil).

I've since put a 5-way superswitch on the latter, which gives various options; I have coil-tap on positions 2 and 4. Again, not difficult. And a lot quicker than waiting for Fender to make exactly what you want!

Cheers - Peter.

Ever since my band mate pulled out his Strat back in 65 I wanted one. Way later in life I got what I wanted.

My bandmate got his in '58 and I bought it from him the year that Fender released the Jaguar and he bought one.

Sometime in the 90s, I bought a G&L S-500, because it was cheap and I was looking for a full size electric. I really didn't know what I was doing yet, so the reason doesn't matter.

I had sold that, and in '06 I bought a Jimmie Vaughan strat for $500, new. I got this guitar largely to practice on, as it had less-forgiving single coils and a fairly fat neck that made me work a little extra -- although it had great action.

Earlier in the year, I decided to make some room in my house and get rid of all my mediocre guitars and buy only killer guitars. My goal was a killer strat and Les Paul. I found my Les Paul back in April, and come September, I found a used American standard strat, which I traded in the Jimmie Vaughan for. Got about what I paid for it, so it worked out for me.

The Vaughn, in its own right, is a very special guitar, with it's v-neck and unique circuitry, and could have been a keeper.

Was at a large guitar store while on travel and held/played an Eric Johnson signature strat, v-neck, tobacco burst finish. What a beautiful guitar. I was in love. But couldn't pull the trigger because I was just learning to play and couldn't justify the money. I dreamed and drooled about that guitar all trip and all the way home. I literally dreamed! A couple weeks later I found an American Deluxe, v-neck, tobacco burst in my local shop - "basically" the same guitar I told myself. Bought it that day, and for only a few hundred less than the Eric Johnson.

I still kick myself -- literally I. KICK. MYSELF!! To this day, I dream about that Eric Johnson and want to find another. I think the reason I just can't find a guitar that gives me that "feeling". And I have some really, really nice guitars now.

I consider myself a Fender Stratocaster man, but I am absolutely schizophrenic about guitars. My hero(s) played Stratocasters (Stevie Ray), love the look of the Stratocaster (best-looking guitar IMO), but love the sound of the Les Paul paired with a Marshall (so I'm torn). When I think guitar, I think Stratocaster - I just can't play 'em like the others....

On top of that my favorite guitar to play, that I own, is my '52 reissue telecaster.

What's wrong with me.... ????

Doesn't appear that the OP had high value for the Vaughn.
