57 years ago, my pocket money saw me to a Danelectro shorthorn with 2 pups. The other guitar in the band was a '58 Strat which I eventually came to own, for a time. That story's been told in these pages many times so I'll not digress. Given the quality of the way the Squier Strats are being built, I would have enjoyed having the opportunity of choice. But that would have to wait decades and the good fortune of another generation's being in the right place at the right time.

Indeed so. The yoof of today don't know how good it is for them and yet far more would rather spend their money on computer games over something which may shape the rest of their life.

I despair of my teenage son. If he had taken up guitar and spent half the time learning, rather than killing people on a computer screen, he could be much better than I ever will be. He has excellent taste in music but has that terrible affliction of modern youth in wanting instant gratification.

As a foot note to my previous post; I came within a hair of buying an Avon SG on eBay recently. If it hadn't been "collect only" and at the other end of the country, it could have been mine. Silly really as I doubt it is a particularly good guitar but would still be nice to have. It may well be like old cars and girlfriends, and best remembered through rose tinted spectacles...but on the other hand.

[i]One has to be equally motivated to arrive home from high school, throw your books in a corner, pickup an 'el-cheepo' guitar, throw a 45 rpm record on an equally 'el cheepo' lo-fi turntable and spend two hours trying to learn a Chuck Berry guitar solo instead of studying for a chemistry exam. It's what you have the fire in your belly for and every individual stokes that fire with a different kind of fuel.

Nearly 60 years later I can say, with confidence, that I have dabbled in, and been able to accomplish a minute amount of what Eric Clapton has in his career. However, Eric has achieved 'zero' in what I've accomplished in my life. Who is the worse for not doing so, I will never know. All I can say is that it all been worthwhile.

Perhaps, but bedding supermodels and a garage full of Ferraris might help salve his disappointment. ;-)

When he stands in final judgment at the throne of The Almighty, none of that will count for jack.

I know from whence Doc speaks.

Splurge!! Nix the rosewood and find yourself someone who is selling one of those LTD Daphne Blue Clapton's.
Helluva guitar! 8)

Doc

I looked for one but can't find any.
They must have sold out.
What was the selling price?

Right now I've got my eye on 2 different Strats.
One is a limited edition, 1-piece rosewood neck, with Fat 50's pups.
LOVE the tone and feel of this guitar!
The problem is that it's supposed to also come in daphne blue but all I can find is the 3 color burst, and I don't want that finish.
MSRP is $1450.

The other is still the Jeff Beck in surf green, but it has vintage noiseless pups. I've played those on another Strat and they are nice, better to my ears than the noiseless 3 or 4th gen. But, After hearing the straight up and true single coil Fat 50's, the "noiseless" are not the tone I'm looking for.

My Lace Sensor Strat is quiet and the noiseless don't sound as good to my ears as the LC's, and the Fat 50's sound like the single coil Strat tone that I've been wanting.
So, I really need to find a daphne blue limited edition 1-piece rosewood neck Strat.
It's only been a couple days past my B-day and I wanted to get one for my B-day, but I have to find one first! :)

Bought a Strat because I wanted to be better than Yngwie, bought a Les Paul because I wanted to be better than Randy Rhoads and Slash, but only not as successful

Back in 2009-10, when the EC Gray [Grigiosilverstone] and the EC Daphne Blue guitars were offered for a one year limited production run, I believe the MSRP was around $3500. I suppose you'll have to search eBay, Reverb.com, and Craig's List if you want one. There's one on eBay presently asking $5700. Personally, I'm done with these high-pie-in-the-sky Fenders. I've got my lot years back and am satisfied.

Of all things which could be less to your liking PUPs are perhaps the easiest to resolve. If all the rest ticks your boxes then absolutely get it.

Better in every way except for the money. Being a guitarist these days is like being in a 'Boy Band'. No one wants to invest in you, unless you're Bieber or Kanye West, or can draw Kardashian-type crowds which sucked ballz!

Newcomer to the forum (well, had to re-register, since the forum couldn't find my original, and neither could I).

I played acoustic since I was about 15, and always held in awe those electric players who could wring out sounds I could only imagine. Now, here I am, just turned 65, and I finally took the plunge. I bought an Artist Series Eric Clapton Strat in Olympic White, and it was love at first sight. Er, handle. Whatever.

Clapton and Jeff Beck have been my guitar heroes for decades. I chose the EC over the JB model because I liked the "soft V" neck over the "C."

Having lost my heart to the Strast, I went on a bit of a spree. I liked Telecasters too, so when I found a 60th Anniversary Tele for sale, I yanked it up. Since then, I've added a 40th Anniversary Strat (with aluminum body) and a brand-new Magnificent Seven Tele. I love them all.

And oh yes, I also picked up a limited edition Les Paul to round out my collection.

I still play acoustic, but not nearly as often! :)

It took you 50 years to find enough "curiosity" to even TRY a Stratocaster?!? Or what am I missing here? Because; had you tried a Strat in that 50 years...I think you'd have bought one 49 years ago. LOL...just bust'n chops bro.
Heck; 50 years ago (in America), there were two top players 1). Fender and 2). Gibson---how does one go so long without picking up Fender's 2nd. most popular model of the times?
