I have a 2005 Strat Deluxe with the S1 switch gimmick inside the volume knob. When i am playing sometimes there is a very slight volume dip for a few seconds, at times completely out. It always comes back fairly quickly. I have tried to isolate it but it happens so quickly i can't get to it.

My initial thought was the S1 volume pot but all the pots are smooth and have never given the crackle that often comes before death. So should i start with the 5 way switch? I haven't even opened it up yet to poke around so there might be something obvious but that is usually not the case.

Has anyone run into anything like this? any thoughts or opinions?

Hi there does it happen on every position? Could be anything e.g switch, pickup so it will be a process of elimination.
I have had scns with intermittent windings and if you think it may be only one pickup just try pressing it slightly to see if the sound comes and goes when that pickup has been selected :D

Carrying that thought further - it's also possible the problem is outside the guitar - a cable, pedal, amp, electric outlet & such. These are relatively easy to eliminate; try different combinations.

Yes, my first thought would be a bad cap in an amp or pedal with boost/preamp function.

But it's quite possible that there's something up with the guitar, like a temporary short due to loose copper winding in a pot, or shielding foil rubbing against a wire, or a bad solder joint, or a corroded TS socket, or ...

Intermittent problems suck for troubleshooting. But still, try to replicate and isolate. Play with different guitars. Different amps. Different cables. Pots at different levels. Cold amp, hot amp. See where it can be replicated, and go from there.

thanks, it happened on 2 different amps (mine and later at my guitar teachers place) so that eliminates the cable and/or amp. Another thing brought up might be the jack which would make sense taking the brunt of the abuse... i will just trouble shoot as best i can and start with the cheapest parts to replace and work my way out.

Did you establish that it happens on all pickups or just one ....?
My recommendation is you start there then follow a logical approach before you blow any cash :D
