Recently, I had Phil Jacoby, at Philtone Guitars, modify my ’75 Strat with the David Gilmour mod.
The Mod: Regular pickup selections 1 – 5, plus in positions 1 (or 5) and 2 (or 4) I can blend in the neck pickup with the bridge or use all three pickups. This was all done without drilling any wholes, using a switch or using a push/pull pot.

When I first got the guitar, the tone pots were not part of the circuit (a wire was not soldered properly), and the pickups sounded beautiful. It was pure pickup tone without coloring from the pots. Since I wanting to use the tone knobs, I attached the missing wire. I didn’t like how it changed the tone of the guitar and they weren’t very good anyway, so I bought some Emerson Blender Pots. What a difference!

I’m sure some of you may be upset that I altered a vintage instrument, or have some questions, so watch the video, and all will be explained.

Please comment on the video: What you liked, didn’t like, and your overall thoughts on the mod.

Hi Paris,

This is an interesting mod, though it comes at the price of not being able to independently control the tone of each pickup. When combining two pickups, I often find I want to roll tone off the pickup nearest the neck - on a Strat I'll often take it right down, with some amp settings this creates a sort of 'cocked wah' tone. I'd love to be able to try this with the bridge/neck combination.

Anyway, I know you have the Deluxe Plus with the Blender card (I recently bought one) - I'm wondering if you've got the 'Dipper' card? I know this could be used to have the middle position select neck & bridge pickups combined, and I suspect it would also allow independent tone control through the two tone controls, unlike the Blender card. I suspect I'd find this more useful than being able to blend the pickups. If you've tried this, I'd be interested to know what you think.

I don't really understand the Dipper card. I do own the Super Stacker and Phaser cards. I get much more use oit of the Super Stacker than the Phaser card.

I find that the Blender card is basically the mod I did, but not as much clarity as the '75 Strat with the mod.

By the way, which color did you choose? I own the blue, think it is beautiful. Overall, a very versatile guitar. Great with effects and modern style of playing.

I also chose the blue - it's a really unusual finish and can look very different depending on the light, but always really beautiful. I see this colour is no longer on Fender's site so I guess it's the most popular & has sold out first. I'd agree about being versatile, this model would be a gift for anyone who does a lot of recording. It's a long time since I did any - but it's still a lot of fun. :)

I bought the guitar with a choice of free card - and picked the Phaser, as I do love those out of phase tones, even though their use may be limited. But I also bought the Stacker; my preference as that still offers the normal positions 2 & 4 sounds, with just neck/middle series wiring in position 3.

I ignored the Dipper as I didn't really see it's potential, but now I understand it better I'm tempted to grab one while they're still available: You can select any pickup to be on or off in position 3, using DIP switches. So, you can create a 'kill switch' position with all off, or have 'all on', or have neck & bridge on. Now, the Fender instructions for the Phaser show the tone controls as T1 = selector 5 & 4, and T2 = selector 3, 2 & 1. However, I've found that in position 4, I actually get T1 = neck pickup & T2 = middle pickup, so I can get the sound I like with tone rolled off the neck pickup. I'm hoping the Dipper actually works the same, & I'll be able to explore the neck & bridge combined with tone controls on each; which the Blender doesn't offer.

Your description is of the Dipper makes more sence to me. Thanks.
