Hello everybody, yesterday I went to guitar technician (luthier) and he told me that this sound is normal between vintage single coils (SSL1 and Texas special) and distortion or overdrive high gain, they are not good friends. So, I bought new pickup to bridge position, Dimarzio Fast Track 1, and problem solved, great sound with distortion, without warble and loud noise.

Thanks for you time and your help, I learned a lot and I appreciate that.

My best regards from Chile.

First, I'm glad your problem has been solved, so in a way case closed.

Second, I don't agree with your guitar tech in many points:
The warble in your vid is not normal for any pickup type.
Texas Specials (or SSL-1's) aren't vintage output, although they have vintage stagger.
The "stratitis" is known to happen on some TxSpecials, but a) only seldom, and b) it's fixable with pickup height adjustment.
And I fail to see how swapping the bridge pickup would affect the warble which in your video was on middle pickup.

My best guess is, the pickup height is now better suitable for the gear, or that there was something wrong with the wiring and it was fixed with the new DiMarzio install. But it would be nice to hear from other DlxRoadhouse owners, if they've experienced the same problem or not - it is faintly possible the PCB presets collide with some amp's gain, overdriving the signal too much.

Mm, still a bit of a mystery, isn't it? Sounds a bit more like 'poke & hope' than proper fault investigation and diagnosis!

But as long as you're now happy with it, fair enough!

Cheers - Peter.

I will shop volume and tone pots and I will put out the circuit include in Roadhouse Deluxe, because like you, I'm not agree with technical guy and the problem still is present in neck and meddle single coil, in bridge the sound is great. I will write when I make the change.

Hello everybody, I change all the electronics wire, I put out the S1 and preamp circuit and now my Roadhouse is a normal Fender. The strange sound stay present when use some distortion or overdrive with a high gain, in every pickup and every string and freet, more strong in G string and between freet 10 and 14.
Is possible that the problem will be nut or bridge? I don't have more options.
Thanks.

This is a useful clue.

- When fretting around the 12th fret, the largest amplitude (the biggest distance the string moves while vibrating) will be right over the neck pickup.
- For staggered pole pieces, if they're old style, "historically correct", they're really staggered for a wound G string, and the G pole piece is the highest.

The combination of the two means that when you play close to the 12th fret, like frets 10-14, and especially on the G string, the string comes closest to the neck pole piece. Even if you don't hit the pole piece, it can get close enough that the magnet messes with the string vibration a bit every time it comes close, with strange sound effects as a result.
If that is the problem, try to lower the neck pickup a bit, or even lower the g string pole piece a tad (but be careful - push it too far, and you may never get it back up).

Also make sure that the bridge radius (rounding) is correct for your fretboard - if it's set to a larger radius than 9.5" (which is what I believe the Roadhouse Deluxe has), and is more flat than the neck, the middle strings will have lower action and be closer to the pickups, which increases the problem.
The best way to measure the radius at the bridge is with a radius gauge, like this one from StewMac:

Image

However, you can make a makeshift one from cardboard or stiff paper, by making a circle with a 9.5" (24.1 cm) radius, and then cut out and discard the middle, and keep the outside. Cut off a piece big enough to cover the bridge, and put it on the strings right above the bridge. If it doesn't touch every string, adjust the height on the bridge until it does. This method is not 100% precise, because it measures the top of the strings, and not the bottom. You can get around that by pushing a bit harder on the bass side (where the strings are thicker).

Or you may even want to try different strings. Stiffer strings or increased gauge means a smaller amplitude for the same loudness, due to higher mass.

Thanks arth1, I will do your recommendation. The last week change strings, pass from 0.09 to 0.10 and the sound is better but not perfect. Now... hands to work.
