I asked for the confirmation for MIA or MIJ just because of that "dark grey from what I can see, almost black".
All US greybobbins I've seen are clearly gray. The "almost black" characterization would suit a MIJ ST-62 better.

The 57/62 set isn't the original set for a 1987 AVRI '62, but that's what they used in later days AVRI 62's. And anyway, they are maybe a step closer to originals than the Duncan.

jmattis, where did you get the information that the 57/62 pickups were not original? The 57/62 pickups have always been the pickups in the vintage reissue models, regardless of the marketing name the US Vintage reissues were going by Vintage Reissues, AVRI's etc. The only change to the pickups I am aware of was the bobbins going from red to gray bottoms. I know the 57/62 Pickups were available as such in 87, as I bought a set (with gray bobbins) then and put them into a Strat I had because I liked them so much in my '82 Vintage Reissue.

On this topic, from John C's previous post; "I just plain missed the 1998-2012 "Original 57/62" being on Fender's website when I checked yesterday - but those pickups are different than what you have in your 1987."

But more seriously, (Note: I'm not trying to be a "red bobbin - grey bobbin" fanatic here - AVRIs in any form are IMHO the best Fenders outside CS guitars) I've understood that the 57/62 went through some changes in 1998. New stagger, bevels and whatnut. So, '87 57/62's and new 57/62's aren't the same - although similar.
BTW, on the AVRI '62 service diagram dated 05-17-2000, pickups are part #0053776000, the 57/62 set is #0992117001 - marketing or part number revisions or redesigns, I've no idea.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try to find a single pickup somewhere. There's no rush.

And yes, in hindsight, I should have gotten he pickup back. Long time ago and I just thought of it as "broken" and not worth getting back. Live and learn.

Jmattis...understand, yeah I should have stated I meant before the current version with the beveled magnets...I was trying to relate it to the OP's time frame. I would agree that the 57/62s might be some of the best sounding pickups though!

The service diagram pickups (part #0053776000) are sold separately: darrenriley US Vintage Strat pup
And so are the 57/62's: darrenriley 57/62 pup
Both beveled, and the stagger seems very similar. Someone count the windings, please...

Sorry, somehow got stuck in the "whole pickup set" idea before.

Hello,
I have available an original Fullertone black bobbin from a Squier Stratocaster JV, weren't those the same installed in the AVRIs before 1998?
Black bobbin, cloth wire, no beveled, vintage staggering, reads around 5.9kohm.
