I've slept since then.

One of the things that comes up from time to time is a theory that he tends to buy guitars in lots.
He is thought to lay claim to a quarter or a tenth (or whatever) of a run of some model, buying directly from Fender and then end up with a glut of a certain kind of neck or loaded body in his inventory, which he sells at his leisure. That's just a speculation. I've never seen anyone provide anything to substantiate the theory but it does seem to persist. I've heard that hypothesis a few times.

Rumors are that he buys (and has bought) a lot of the "mom & pop" shop's inventory
and then parts them out. Not just in this country either.

Does he wait for them to have a closing out sale and then swoop down and bring in the harvest at a discount?
It seems to me like it wouldn't be much of a profitable business if he had to pay full retail.

I have only tried one once, and I can't say I particularly liked it.

Back before I bough my first strat I had my heart set on an American Deluxe circa 2010/11. I played one in the store and was seriously underwhelmed. The neck just didn't feel special or any more comfortable than other strats. In comparison I played an American Standard and was amazed. After that i dreamed and fantasised about the Standard, and gave the deluxe nary a second thought.

How much was I influenced by the rest of the guitar (i.e the pickups or the colour that I hated) I'm not sure. perhaps it tainted my view, but nevertheless I haven't been a fan of the compound ever since.

Like it or not?

I had heard a mix of things on these compound radius boards. I built the below guitar using a 2005 compound radius neck and I have to admit, it played really nice, especially about the 12 registry. The guitar is now in Paris and I have plans to build another one using a different colored body. So YES! I like them and they really help with the fretting-out issues when bending the strings.

+1...it is so beautiful...it belongs in Paris...

...speaking of which...

Playing the guitar causes my hand to cramp up as well. I prefer the soft V Clapton neck over a baseball bat neck.

+1...on the EC being preferred...but I have a Jimmie Vaughn that's even more comfortable ...

The Fender JV neck has a little less shoulder than the EC...feels like less meat in my hand...

...maybe closer to a "Hard V"?

Are there any compound radius V necks? (sorry about the hijack Mike) : )

I'm sitting here wondering why the Fender Deluxe Players Srtat in no longer???? Its MIM but has all the bells and whistles. Ash body, noiseless pickups, compound radius fretboard, mapple neck with a price you couldn't beat at $499.99. Now I see that Fender has a guitar with all those bells and whistles but is now saying we have to pay $799.99. Really????? It is the same body, neck and electronics as the Players start for $499.99 with a different pick guard. Whats up with that Fender?????

Nobody from Fender bothers reading the forum.
Contact Fender directly if you want to moan about something, otherwise chill out.

For Reealz? .. I don't know that the Players Strat has been discontinued .. that would be a shame
looks like the new direction is to refine the guitars coming out of Mexico ..
Smart business .. upgrade the line .. make a few extra shekels .. showcase a few ideas ..

I looked at that new Fender Deluxe Strat Series online today ..
they all have serial #'s starting with MX .. the necks are all the same ..
Big Heads w/modern C - shape .. 12" radius .. 22 Narrow Tall frets & 1.65" nut ..

The Roadhouse has interestingly named electronics .. "6-position V6 rotary switch utilizes the onboard preamp to provide 6 distinct tone settings ranging from wiry single-coil to scorching lead. The S-1 Switch bypasses the preamp completely."
Its knobs .. Master Volume w/S1 switch .. V6 Rotary switch .. Master Tone

I've always wanted "wiry single-coil to scorching lead" tones .. I think : )
maybe some combination of Boost & Overdrive ..

msrp is $799 .. street price maybe $600 in a month or two?

Yep Im just a disgruntled MIM Strat guy who was about to make the purchase of the players start but no one had one that I could get and all of them i see on line are more than $500. I can except that Fender wants to make money. Im thinking what happened was some one at fender realized what they where selling for such an inexpensive price. I am glad to see the Mexican Made comming up in quality though. Yeah I'm thinking if you go on Fenders sight and try to find a Deluxe Players Strat you won't find one. Just venting a bit stratmangler

Reviving this one for a little further discussion.
Sitting here at the pooter surfing my usual haunts and have Warren Haynes (The Mule) blasting out Bad Little Doggie and it made me think of this thread.
Warren's a great slide player and I'm just wondering if anyone has tried one of these necks for slide work and if so, how well it works ... or not.

There are still some nice guitars at the $499 price point.
I wouldn't get too hung up with the fingerboard radius - I have an Am Deluxe Strat, and a MiM Standard, and I can't say as I notice all that much difference switching between them.
The Am Deluxe has a compound radius, the MiM Standard is 9.5".
My son's 60s Lacquer Strat has a 7.25" radius, and it takes no time to adjust between the different instruments.

My favorite guitar has a 14" radius. My American Standard Strat does not have a compound radius--just 9 all the way. I would prefer to have either a D shape neck or the compound. I have not played the compound neck but if it gets me closer to the neck on my other axe whose make I shall not disclose (when in Rome as it were) it sounds attractive to me. What Fender is asking for price-wise just for the compound neck is definitely not worth the money IMO. You can almost buy another guitar for that.
