I am looking to get a guitar for a teenager who is ready to put some piano and ukulele theory into practice and wants to rock from what I can tell ("Carry on my Wayward Son" sounds cool on a uke but looses some chutzpah during that first turn into F#)
So I'm deciding between three Squire models, can anyone tell me:

if the HW on the Squire Deluxe, Rails and the Vibe are different or am I paying a $100 premium for a paint job on the vibe and it's the same guitar?

if the Duncans on the Hot Rails get a strat sound clean or does this duck not quack?

do these guitars have any outstanding flaws relative to their price point?

thank you in advance, the verb, the city and the auto parts store.

A pleasant surprise to hear that teenagers still play Kansas songs... :)

On the specs and what they are worth, you'll just have to compare for yourself:
Deluxe
Deluxe Hot Rails
Classic Vibe 60s
Classic Vibe 50s
A note, just IMHO; there are a lot of things that separate those models, not just the hardware.

Generally speaking, Squiers (especially pickups) are "voiced" to the models/eras/genres they imitate.
And of course, the hardware reflects the price levels.
CV's have a pretty good rep, but I wouldn't rule out any of the "better" Squiers as quite decent beginner guitars - provided they get a good initial setup. Another note, just IMHO; on some happy parts of the planet, one can find a second hand MIM for practically same money as those Squiers, so that may be an option.

But the main thing is the target player in question - he/she should feel OK with the instrument. MomPopAuntUncle may choose somehing that is totally lame and embarrassing, so maybe ask him/her.

thanks, yes my daughter and her and mom are going by color, or did it have a dragon on it. Chicks right!?!? crazy part is mom owned an olympic white squire my brother borrowed and it mysteriously disappeared years ago when he paid his rent!

I think she is settling on a Squire Surf, she likes the green and I prefer rosewood necks mostly because I've killed at least two maple ones playing and I have rosewood on my SG and G&L and its "softer". the pickups are supposedly better than you'd expect from the reviews I've read and they retain some of that fender sound and they're balanced. I've never used lipstick pickups so I have no idea what to expect if I plug her axe into the front end of my 1/2 stack. She can't try mine because I'm lefty, she's righty and actually mine is apart at the moment to further complicate this.

Being a guitarist and not a musician I have found her a Berkley grad to teach her and mentioned those who get acoustics write songs, those who start on electrics tend to study theory and write songs and either one can play either beast. He mentioned the squires were good and I did have an affinity for a while to take the place of my parted out strats but ultimately decided better to scrimp for a while and get one back on it's feet before I regret keeping it. I liked it, limited and not my '97 American made by a long shot but nothing sounds like one, nothing plays like one and had I had one before I had that Horner there would have been far fewer electric shocks.

 You - The Man of the House - were thinking dollars and gidgets, then the Ladies just rolled you over with the important factors... (Color affects my guitar acquisitions, too - if there is a choice.)

On the VM Surf model: Again you can expect the tone to follow the guitar's "marketing image". Think fifties, vintage, Danelectro; all typical for lipstick pups. But that's not the only possible way to go - SRV proved that with his Charley.

Anyway, be sure to give any guitar you (actually, they) choose the initial setup I mentioned. Too many Squiers get slandered just because noone bothered to check & adjust.

BTW, you have noticed there's a "SQUIER® BY FENDER" section of the forum..?

yeah, if that guitar doesn't match an outfit... I was more of the "I can make this fender bullet into a lefty if I cut the bottom half off the body with this band saw and duct tape the electronics back in when I'm done!"

Didn't know, and thanks for the heads up on the squire forum, and I'm listening to "life without you", and remember he was going to play a college near my house, they would not sell us tickets without student ID and I was in HS and remember saying "maybe next year"
