Some of you may remember when I first acquired this guitar. It wasn't exactly doing its thing and after having it carefully looked over it turned out that the mini-toggle which turns the pre-amp on and off was defective and needed replacement.

A seriously dangerous instrument when aroused. 8)

Hi Doc, am I right in thinking that the 2 E's are very close to the edge of the board? Or is it a trick of the light/camera/angle, whatever?

Cheers - Peter.

The strings lie 2mm inside the edge of the board at the 21st fret and increase to 3 mm at the 1st. My '08 Deluxe VG Strat measures 3mm at the 22nd fret and decreases to 2 mm at the first fret. I believe one finds the strings lying closer to the edge of the board on the the vintage necks. I do recall that the early Strats'..like my old '58 of blessed memory had a chronic problem with the 6th string falling off the board at the 21st fret. Had alot to do with neck alignment and nut width. I don't have information sufficient to compare nut widths between the Clapton and the new Elite. Unfortunately, the new website does not appear to be providing those specs as they used to. At least, I can't seen to find them.

There's a Specs tab 'bout a 1/3 of the way down Doc...

...it's informative...Nut Width: 1.685" (42.8 mm)

Neck Shape: Compound Back Shape, Modern "C" to "D"

Fingerboard Radius: 9.5"-14" Compound Radius (241 mm-355.6 mm)

Truss Rod Nut: Heel-Mounted Spoke Wheel Adjustment

Here's the link: Fender American Elite Stratocaster

The nut on the Clapton neck is 0.8mm narrower than the Elite. Speaks to my earlier point. To borrow from my previous life.....0.8 mm can make the difference between success and failure where tolerances are rigid.

Great guitar. When I first saw Clapton in concert in 1987 he was playing the guitar like that, was after the August come out. Phil Collins played drums and Robert Cray opened for him.

That would be the Collins. East, Phillinganes, band whose DVD I have. He's using the red production prototype which doesn't have the mode switch but I'm not at liberty presently to see if the neck on that guitar had 22 frets at the time.

Agree. That and the pewter until the guitars went into production.

#V000009 became a 22-fretter shortly after the South Bank show in 1987, with #V000008 following in late September of 1988.

Eric was even seen cradling Buddy's red Starfire guitar!

One of the first jobs Mike Stevens did once the CS opened its doors in 1987 was to make a 22-fret neck and bump the MDX circuit at 25dB. I suspect the pewter guitar in its final form was presented to Eric a couple of weeks before Paul Natkin took the photos.

Ditto on 'the read again', Dan. You might want to post a pic of your 'Martian-caster' with a bit of a bio, in case Jason's never seen it.

YMMV 8)
