Hi all... It's been a while since I owned a Strat (foolishly sold my 91 Strat Plus 2 years ago). I picked up a 95 MIM Strat recently. It plays well and sounds good, but the 5 way switch is a bit loose, meaning the detents are very soft. Is there a way to tighten it up, or do I just replace it?

Also, there is no tone control on the bridge pickup. What does it take to add it?

Thanks in advance.

Pickups switch ; you must replace it by a good American made. You can't fix it.

Tone ; on the pickup switch ; just put a jumper between the bridge pickup contact and the tone pot.

Strat Plus is a great guitar, you do a big mistake :(

+1

Next time you do a re-string, pull the pickguard off and take the necessary action. Shouldn't require more than 30 or 40 minutes. You might also consider replacing the zinc-alloy trem block with one of steel -- one of the most significant sonic improvements you can make.

Thanks.
Will pick up a new switch and solder a jumper while rewiring.
Already added a High Mass Tremblock.

Just look how is wired the tone pot on your 2 other pickups and put a jumper for the neck pickups the same way as two other.

Well... I put in a new USA 5-way switch and jumpered it for the bridge tone. Everything seems to be wired correctly (checked against standerd Strat wiring diagrams), but I think I'm getting some sound out of all pups with the switch in the neck position. When I tap the poles with a screw driver, I get an audible click thru all pups. Odd.

Also, the store had a Fender 5-way switch that was MiM. I asked about a USA version. He went to the Repair shop and came back with one, a USA. They both had the same part number, same cost, but were labeled differently. The sticker on the part itself was different and the tabs on the USA were copper, the MiM was plated.

Wait a minute ... there's something wrong here :D
Post some pics of your wiring if you can, sorry to say but in the neck position if wired normal you should only get the neck pickup assuming the click you are hearing thru the amp is when each pickup is tapped :D

I followed a similar on to that diagram, and the jumper location.

I gave it to a buddy to look over... another set of eyes.

Jimi used to take the spring out and let it "float" so you could try that, or try a new spring before you solder though your pickgaurd like I've done.

Well... The problem was a broken cap leg. A new one is on order.

Stratdragon... It's a loose 5 way, not trem.
As for the trem, I keep mine decked.

An easy and relatively inexpensive fix.

You'll be back in business in no time!

Well.. after new caps and 4 hours of rewiring... no go. He is totally perplexed. The caps meter out, the pots meter out, the switch works...

I'm just going to get a new harness and be done with it.

Consider the Kinman H9
It's an awesome harness.
I have two of them and they have become the first mod I'll do to improve any future Strat I may acquire.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm confucius...
The issue started with replacing a switch plus adding one jumper wire.
Now it's new caps, hours of wiring, perplexia, harnesses..?
I'm starting to think using a pro might be a) faster b) more reliable and c) eventually cheaper option to get the guitar playing.
