Hi Guys. Hope someone can help.

I recently bought a factory new AM STD HSS Shawbucker loaded pickguard from "the stratosphere" I wired it all up and I'm getting 60 cycle hum in all positions except #4 where the neck and middle single coils create a hum cancelling effect. I understand position 5 and 3 will be noisy as they are selecting the direct single coils. But I thought on this HSS, I would have hum cancelling on 1 and 2 as well... Even position #1 direct to Shawbucker is as noisy as #5. Is this normal for the shawbucker?

Wiring was pretty straight forward. There were 3 black wires and 1 white clipped. I just added 1 black to the claw, 1 black to the cavity lug and 1 black to the output sleeve. Then the white to the output tip.

** I should mention that I'm using a cheap output jack from Guitar Fetish. Could this be the problem?

All is working great except for this HUM!. At least on my SSS I get hum cancelling in 2 of the 5 positions. Now I only have 1.

Am I missing something or could this be a defective pickup?

Thanks

It sounds like you've wired it right, but a photo might help. Are you sure the 5-way isn't touching any cavity shielding, or anything like that? Does it hum with the scratchplate off the body but plugged into the amp?

As you say, positions 3 & 5 will hum, otherwise it should be quiet. If you have wired it right and there isn't a problem such as I suggest, I'd go back to the retailer.

Cheers - Peter.

Did you ground your tremolo claw in back?

He says he has - "I just added 1 black to the claw..."

Sounds like a ground loop or a coil on the bucker is bust.
I wouldn't put any faith in shielding. To paraphrase Martian, it doesn't work and changes the sound of your guitar

Until you post up some decent quality photos of your handiwork my money is on there being nothing wrong with the loaded scratchplate.
The loadeded plate has passed through QC at Fender, and the vendor is experienced at disassembling guitars for sell on parts.

My money is on a wire being in the wrong place.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think everything is fine and i'm just hearing general interference from my location (house basement) I'm going to bring it to a music shop so I can A/B the same model with the same variables. I'm betting their both going to have the same amount of general noise.

I hear this shawbucker is un-potted so maybe it just has more general noise to it than I'm used to.

Only at volume or with lots of gain. Unpotted pickups tend to feedback easier. They cancel out hum the same as potted humbuckers do. Which is why I suspect a ground loop problem or a broken pickup if you're hearing it on the humbucker only position.

Or maybe your amp doesn't like where you have it plugged in.

That's funny  Who is this Martian, where's he from?
I cannot confirm if his shielding is useless when playing a Strat on Mars. I wouldn't suggest chasing a good tone on Mars either.

But people from Earth, and myself, have had decades to work out if shielding is a failure or changes guitar sound/tone...so far, we cannot do without shielding in cables, and metal shielding on a pickguard and inside control cavities does inspire playing through reduction of annoying electromagnetic and 60 cycle hum.
* This noise reduction may not be optimum and further impeded if the guitar wiring is not correct, or a faulty electronic device nearby, or we stand next to flouro lights type electronic switching.

Thicker the shielding the better the reduction.

It really does...sound better!!

Well Johnny, Martian was an extremely knowledgeable forum member, who studied pickups amongst other things during his time working with and ensuing friendship with Larry Dimarzio. Now sadly passed on. So don't be waiting for him to reply eh.

When you learn about faraday cages and added capacitance. Rather than popular misconception. I'll gladly talk to you. Until then, why not refrain from glib comments as you're really not very good at humour.

As far as I (with my limited understanding of electronics) have understood Mr. M's opinions on shielding, he thought it to be somewhat useless, because pickups don't usually get shielded, and that shielding to some degree diminishes the frequency response of pickups by adding capacitance. (That's somewhat similar to a pickup with or without a metal cover.)

But, adapting his approach to a lot of wiring questions, I'd agree with stratmangler; check the wiring/soldering first.

And just for fun, a quote:
Martian wrote:
FWIW, to have even the possibility of a ground loop, there would first have to be two separate power sources of different voltages in the same circuit. A passive pickup wiring circuit surely does not have these.
