Though a Strat aficionado Eric Johnson also plays LPs and other humbucker-equipped guitars, developing his own signature humbucking pickups with DiMarzio.

Wonder if he agrees having one of his Strats fitted with an HSS configuration without the need to switch instruments between songs....

Two Fender EJ single coils in the neck & middle and a DiMarzio EJ Custom humbucker in the bridge position. Not sure if he approves the idea.

Why don't you ask him?
I'm pretty sure his response would be something along the lines of his having and using various guitars is because they perform different functions for him.
Why would he want to screw up a Stratocaster, particularly his own signature model?

Besides that, the pickups in his Signature Strat are voiced to work in their relevent postions.
You'd need to carve the guitar body up to fit a humbucker (The EJ model is SSS routed).

Given Dimarzio's penchant for making all of their humbuckers available in singlecoil size. I don't think you'd have to carve the pickup route.
However I can't see EJ going for the idea of a HSS Strat either.

Obviously PUPS are important but they are not the only influence in tone, feel and playability. Screwing a couple of Humbuckers to a Strat isn't going to make it a Les Paul.

You're offending my babies, John! :)
No seriously, you're right - these Strats still both sound like Strats. Nothing like SSS, but nothing like an LP either!

Cheers - Peter.

Sorry for the offense.

PS. I like the US Big Apples no matter tone controls are present or not.

None taken, chromeface! I was joking with John! :D

These are just 2006 US Strats with custom scratchplates & SD p/ups (different on each). While I love SSS Strats for their versatility, I also love the simplicity of a 3-sound fat Strat. I'm always surprised, though, that despite the extra power, they still sound like Strats!

Cheers - Peter.
