I am impressed with the Strats that Sonny Landrith plays. I wonder why Fender doesn't offer a "Sonny Landrith" artist model?

Over the years there have been many discussions about the hows and whys of Fender signature models.
Truth is, nobody really knows how or why some artists get picked ... except maybe the people who do the picking.
I have several albums by Sonny.
He's a fine picker.
I like his work.
I don't know that he carries with him a rep for being a "seminal" artist.
Perhaps that may be a factor.
??

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

This sounds like a great idea. I'm critical when it comes to astist signature guitars, but this Strat is unique and worth producing.

First of all, I bet Mr. Landreth would be pissed they misspelled his name.

But to be serious, one version of a Landreth Signature Strat would be rather easily doable for Fender. This post from 2010:

Sonny Landreth has many of his Strats (such as this rosewood-neck Fiesta Red American Series pictured below) wired like a vintage hot-rod '57, with the two Samarium Cobalt pickups in the neck & middle positions and the DiMarzio ToneZone humbucker in the bridge. Some models had the ToneZone humbucker mounted into a Telecaster bridge plate.

I watched his video on slide playing. The Strat I was referring to was one that looked like a Tele Strat Hybrid.

Why would you do such a thing? It is a hardtail Strat (which is a very good thing) but then introduces the inconvenience of not having all of the electrics mounted on the pick guard. I really don't see any logical advantage?

With regard to who Fender chooses to be Artisticated I am sure it is purely down to marketing. Can they sell more guitars if it has an association with a particular guitarist?

It does make it more interesting if the guitar in question has some notable peculiarities - Clapton mid boost and triangular neck are gold, Hendrix back to front/upside down etc. But when you consider the recent Edge Strat, which has no real notable features, being different is no great stakes.

What I've seen with Edge is that the pickups and neck are unique. That and the fact the Edge is a Fender board member.

As too who they choose: Either the artist or the CS make a call.

I spoke to Sonny's one time tech a few years back. They were in development stages for a sig model. Guitars and ideas were being sent back and forth. I have no idea if the process is still ongoing or if it's stalled.

I know it's not a definitive answer, but at least know that it is/was in the works.

Having read a few stories of CS development and this seems to be par for the course.
