I've got a MIA Sienna Sunburst with the ash body, and I've noticed how under direct light and at an angle, some of the texture of the wood grain can actually be seen in the poly. Are these grain textures visible on alder as well, or is this particular to ash only? The textured grains can't be felt, and only short grain lines here and there are visible. I've heard that ash wood grain requires a lot of filling, but I didn't know if all Strats have visible grain textures. Thanks.

I have an alder 3 color sunburst where the grain is visible, but nothing like ash. It's a thin finish where under certain light I guess I can see and feel the grain. It's probably subliminal.

Yes, we mentioned this on my recent 'Any difference?' posts, didn't we?

If I really try, I can see similar grooves/marks along the grain on my surf green Special. The paint is very thin - I know, I've already managed to chip it! - so this is presumably the cause. And it's a very lightweight body, if that counts at all.

I'm perfectly happy with it, though. Makes no difference to the guitar as far as I'm concerned!

Cheers - Peter.

This is pretty common for guitars. My '75 Strat's ash grain can easily be seen and felt.
