And I may just break down and buy the EC. (I'm pretty sure they will keep selling that one in black).

Hmm. I would have absolutely agreed with the sentence I bolded, but then again, there is your jinx history...

But to get serious and make a real attempt to help:
You've mentioned some models as options. One thing to note is the radius - CSeries50's = 7.25"; CPlayer50's / J-Vaughan / EC = 9.5".
So, one more option in case you aren't going for the EC price and are open to buying used: they used to make quite decent ST-57's in Japan, vintage radius and a maple V-neck in most models. The resemblance to the US EC signature model was up to the point that the internet wisdom still calls those "Japanese EC Strats"... So, check evilbay & such in your 'hood, might be that dream guitar is out there.

If they do discontinue black in the EC, then I'm going to start getting a little paranoid. :)

Thanks for the tip about the ST-57s. I've seen those listed and was wondering what they were. I didn't know if they were knock-offs, or something Fender licensed.

I just scored a really sweet Fender Pawn Shop 70s Strat Deluxe in black. The color scheme reminds me of a Fender Precision I bought in the early 70s when my '63 sunburst Precision was stolen at some hick-ass gig!!! 8)

I must be nuts but I can't help but feel that this Strat has some sort of magical quality. It almost seems to play itself if that makes any sense?

I was noticing the same thing. I want a black Strat, V neck, but with the vintage tint.

Looks like I'll have to just piece one together. So far the Classic Series 50s neck is my favorite, with the Classic Player 50s right behind it. It's just a matter of which one I can find at the right price.

But don't feel alone. I share in your pain.
