I've got a new American Standard Strat, and I just noticed that the middle pickup was loose. The top screw was not tight (enough that you could visually see the screw was not making contact with the pickguard). The pickup was stable on the lower screw, but the upper part of the pickup would rattle around. I tightened the screw exactly one full turn, and it snugged it down. I would assume the pickup is not supposed to move around, but this is my first Strat so any advice is appreciated. I do plan on getting it set up in the near future.

Yes I agree the pick up should not be rattling. It does sound like you did the right thing turning the screws, the pick up should be able to move towards the strings and down from the strings so you can find your sweet spot. I also agree with you in getting a proper set up

Mud is right get a good set up done. But every guitarist should learn to do their own set ups. There are tons of videos out there that walk you through step by step.

If a pickup is acting "loose", it might have some larger emotional issues. It may be acting out, and begging for help. Oftentimes the best thing to do is reassure it that you love it, and help it to realize that it's valuable and shouldn't throw it's affections around with whomever is nearby. Make it feel special and unique, and it might start being a better pickup.

Wait--we are talking about the pickup's morals, right?

I support the setup by a pro idea - and as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, here's some light reading: Stratocaster setup guide
