I've got a new Sienna Sunburst with some very light handling scratches (can't feel them, and can only be seen under a light at certain angles). I've searched the various forums, and I know it's a reoccurring question, but is there a guitar specific polish/scratch remover? I've looked at Dunlop products, and I even found an old box of Fender Meguiar products on eBay, but I'm not sure if they are good for removing light scratches or just filling and masking them. I've used plenty of polishes and waxes on my last two black trucks, but I'm just scared to use a car care product on my new guitar, but I'd trust everyone's recommendations or product suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hiya Awhendricks,

As far back as I can remember, Fender has used Meguiars polish, buffing compound etc on their guitars.
I'm fairly sure (though not positive) that the current Fender products are "re-branded"...at any rate....they're pretty good in my experience fwiw http://www.fender.com/accessories/care-cleaning/
Cheers,
rob

Pretty much paint/lacquer is paint (assuming you don't have a nitro finish). Any automotive polish should be fine.

Remember that all product marked "polish" will be abrasive to some degree and products marked "wax" wont (shouldn't) be.

Because the body is polished on a wheel, all the tiny surface scratches that polishing produces go in one direction. By hand you tend to use a circular motion which will produce the spiders webs you see around reflected points of light. You can minimise this by always polishing in the same direction.

I would use 3M automotive,.Super Fine for removing holograms (small scratches that you see under certain angles in the light)

I have used a product called Players Kit Guitar Polish and Scratch Remover by Eternashine I got on Ebay. Really works on scuffs and light scratches. Won't fix gouges or knife cuts or someone's initial carved in, but I have had amazing results with this product.

Mother's carnuba paste is my favorite. Real warm carnuba shine, won't run into your pickups and control cavity like liquid wax, and costs a lot less than rebranded car wax poured into tiny bottles.
And it makes my car look great too :)

For stained / satin finish, I use saddle soap. I discovered this by accident, using saddle soap on a leather pickguard, and some got on the guitar. It looked and felt better afterwards, without becoming shiny. My next test is to see how it works on Tolex.

Caveats, YMMV, et cetera.

Use the 3M Ultrafina SE paste with soft microfiber cloth, let the paste do it work don't apply too much pressure...
The finish will start to squeak as it becomes super clean and buffed.
Don't leave the finish unprotected use wax, I use PTFE (Teflon) wax. If it lasts on my car for 4-5 months it will last a long longer on a guitar.
I just did that on my AmSpcl candy apple red and it amazing.
But after removing the wax be careful, guitar will be slippery as hell, it would be so slippery that the stands with foam that used to hold it tight well just don't hold it as well...

Keep in mind....if it is a "played" guitar; you will never be able to keep it "prestine", and there is nothing wrong with natural wear and tear. In fact it add's character, and 'individualizes' your guitar. Just enjoy the damn thing.

That is an issue with the poly finishes though, they don't age like a nitro.

My black MiA is 20+ years old but the body just looks a bit dull and grubby. It has also sunk back to get a slight orange peel. I probably wouldn't wheel buff it but I have used Tcut to get off the surface grime.
