After years of owning a couple of 2005 Indonesian Squiers, I've finally bought myself a "real" Fender.

It's an aged Cherry Fender Deluxe Strat HSS Plus Top (with iOS) - For some reason they're available here in the UK at a knock-down price of £399, but curiously the same model without the USB connection is still around the £600 mark - the only real difference I can see is that mine has a two point pivot trem (which I prefer).

I didn't expect there to be much between the Squiers and MIM strat, but the difference is definitely noticeable. The quality of the finish and hardware is beyond what I could have hoped for, I even like the sound of the ceramic pups over the Squier's alnico ones.

Another thing I didn't expect was the body size/weight - although my Squier's are the same 45mm thickness, the contours of the MIM are noticeably different and more pleasant. The lower bout is wider, as is the distance between the neck and the left horn... overall the Squier's are positively "skinnier".

The Maple neck is a dream to play, very smooth and all the frets are finished perfectly with no overhangs.

Couldn't be happier, I feel like I've finally joined the club

ILOVE the feel and "playability" of the Maple fretboard...nothing beats it in my hands. That one looks to have some delicios characteristics at the bottom of the neck in the last pic. (I enjoy seeing wood grain on Maple necks)

Nice axe!

Man, she is a beauty! Your first Fender purchase is like getting a Porsche as a first car. Most would usually get a MIM strat but you got a Strat Deluxe!

Congratulations Broadwave.
I'm a bit out of the loop with Fender products at the mo. What is the iOS bit all about?

Welcome to the club Broadwave.
The top on your new squeeze looks stunning.

iOS is the iPod/iPad operating system.
The guitar can be hooked up to one with a USB lead

Great another wiring loom to learn...

I don't record, I know nothing about it. I tried it a few years back at home. I'm not computer literate enough to deal with latency. Latency was exactly what put me off.
However I can see that being cut maybe, without having to use and external interface. Looks worth looking at.

Back in the early days, latency was a serious problem on the old 486's and first generation of Pentiums. These days however, it really shouldn't be an issue at all with most decent PC's and recording packages. Even with my older studio system...an AMD Thunderbird 2500 as I recall...using Sonar 4, I can still knock out a solid 30+ tracks, although that gets bumped down to around 16 tracks once I start laying in effects (I tend to be rather heavy-handed with fx's, LOL). And while I'm currently using both Tascam and M-Audio USB audio interfaces (mainly for the added number of inputs), I've actually done this using nothing more than the sound card built into the motherboard. I've also plugged my little 4 channel Behringer mixer right into the sound card and just used the mixer as the "interface". Don't let people b.s. you on this...if you're just getting started with DAW's and just doing fairly simple stuff, you don't really need a high end, outboard interface...it's a load of rubbish usually spewed by gear snobs with WAY too much money to spend, LOL.

Seriously...if you have a half way decent PC (keep it well maintained and don't run a bunch of useless crap on it), basic home recording really isn't that difficult at all. Snag yourself an older copy of Cakewalk and just go for it. Years ago I used to do all my recording on reel to reels and even the occasional 4 track cassette...since having discovered PC based recording, I haven't looked back.

Now midi...that's a totally difference can of worms.....OYE!
