Here's my arrangment of "Telstar" in the style of Chet Atkins performed on the most wonderful '59 AV Stratocaster. -Marty

well done! I have been playing a long time, and that atkins/travis style is still about the toughest for me to play. I like your style a lot.

Thanks Marty! as always your playing is beautiful. How do you find the pickups and neck profile on the AVRI 59' compared to the 54' and 56'?

Thanks! I like the pickups just fine but I haven't done a proper A/B test against the other Strats. I switched out the factory installed 5-position switch for the included 3-position switch. I much prefer the thicker profiles of both the '54 and '56 style necks to the slimmer neck on this '59 (although it's not all that slim such as the '70's necks). I purchased this guitar because it is of the type The Ventures played on their early albums. -Marty Image

I came real close to buying the aztec gold 59' AVRI, but my 56' does not even get the play time it should. I also prefer a fat profile maple neck and was concerned the 59' would be too thin.I say it all the time here, the new AVRI series are great, the only new Fender models that make me want to buy another.
I have to ask, why the switch back to a 3-way switch? a 5-way is the only modern feature I prefer on my strats from pure vintage.

Yeah, I don't particularly recommend the AV '59's - they are great but your AV '56 is the better feeling guitar IMHO. That's all subjective of course. I have changed to the 3-position switches for two reasons. Firstly, I don't want to slip into the Mark Knopfler/ Robert Cray sound. Those guys are both great players and I love their records but I'm not all that keen on that "out of phase" tone (quotes denoting that I know it's not really out of phase). Secondly is just to add to the vintage vibe of the guitars.-Marty

That was just great I dig Chet's playing, and you nailed it, and your tone was spot on for that style of playing.
My Strat has the 5 way switch, and to be honest, very rarely do I venture out of 1,3,5, and when I do I never have been comfortable with that sound, not enough jangle, If I want darker I use my SG and then I turn the bright switch up on my amp

Marty, people like you make me sick! Been playing since the late 50's and - although I'm not bad at what I do - I couldn't even attempt what you did there!

Well done, mate!

Cheers - Peter.

Wow great playing, Chet's style is something I was trying but naturally gravitated to Knopfler style of picking, Chet's style is still to much for me, where you completely use thumb for bas line/rhythm and other fingers for melody simultaneously...it's just something you need to practice the hell out of to create new connections in the brain...how you separate thumb from other fingers still baffles me, you do it great!!!
And of course Chet is still appreciated, Mr.Guitar

Thanks Waymore! Yes, the coordinating of thumb and fingers is the key. I think if one's initial lessons were classical, it makes the Chet style a little easier to learn. -Marty
