Question for you all. Is there a big tone difference between an SSS and an HSS?

Yes, but only when the last two switch settings are selected (bridge/middle and bridge alone). Humbuckers are much hotter than single coils so you'll notice an increase in volume and overall power. It's kind of like having a Les Paul tucked away in your Strat. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of HSS Strats. But if hard rock/classic rock is your thing and you like playing with distortion than an HSS Strat might be the thing for you.

Need a little help here.

I Have a 3month old MIM Road Worn Strat, a close friend of mine that has been playing for years said i could get better sound if I upgraded my pickups...is he right? If so what kind should I look into? Yes i am noobly at all this

Sometimes just adjusting the height of the pickups will give you a much different and possibly better sound. If that don't work, try some Fat 50s.

I have a mexican strat - blue colour. Try squinting you eyes at my profile picture and you'll see my blue strat! What have I done to it? NOTHING... I love the feel and the strat twang that rings in my ears. Couple of questions dear fellas:

(1) how do i detemine the year of manufacture?
(2) I want to replace the floating bridge with a fixed one, I dont use tremolo bar. How should I go about it?

thank you.

Hi sajidwaikhom

My eyes are to old to squint at that tiny pic :D .....post a larger one for us. You can determine the year of manufacture by the serial number usually the first digit will narrow this down. You can also try emailing fender.. consumerrelations@fender.com for info on your guitar.

Well it took some searching to find the MIM club but I'm excited to say that I have just joined. Read a few previous posts as I have a Baja Tele that I love, but did not own a MIM Strat - until yesterday :D
A local, and excellent guitar store was having a big sale and I was looking for a bargain Strat to practice my luthier skills and to transplant a set of Tex-Mex pups I had recently purchased. Walked out with a used MIM Strat, in what I think is ice blue metallic. Only a very few minor marks but the previous owner screwed the trem bar (threads locked up). Since the first thing I do is block out the trem - no problem!!!. It sounds almost as good as my Amer. Strat and feels wonderful. I am really surprised with the pups although they will not be there too long. Neck feels great with no fret problems.
Serial # is MZ1172567 which I believe dates it in either 2001 or 2002.
My plan is to wire it up with the Tex-Mex pups per the Jimmie Vaughan schematic (nice and simple) and perhaps add a cream pearl pick guard. Can't wait to get a little time to get to it. In the mean time I will just play it and love it for what it is - a great guitar at a great price,

Did they just call this model a standard Strat back in the early 2000?

Thanks guys

I bought a brand new Blacktop strat on ebay from the US for $500 including shipping (they sell for between $750 and $1000 here in Oz).

It is all black with a maple fretboard.

I love it, it plays so much better than my 2001 Classic 60's strat which i have never been too happy with (i think it was a dud).

I have already added 2 more springs and screwed down the tremolo and i am waiting on a set of black knobs since i don't like the skirted amp ones.

The pickups are ok but they do sound a bit dark and muddy for my taste, i will probably swap them out for a set of Tex Mex single coils and turn it into a David Gilmour replica of sorts.

I might upgrade the trem block with a steel one from GFS, but i think i will wait a bit since the guitar is set up and intonates so well that i dont want to screw it up just yet.

I also bought a spacer for the string tree since it looks better.

I highly recommend this guitar, it is the best playing one i have ever bought.

No pics yet because my SD card broke :(

I have had excellent results making a term block out of hardwood. It takes a little skill, patience and good sand paper but that way you can get a very tight fit. It looks kind of cool too. I'm not sure that the space in the term cavity is consistent enough that a metal block would fit properly. It cost me about $1.00 for the oak to make the block.
Improvement in the sound was wonderful.

I made it the full width of the cavity, 2.75" and about 0.625" thick. If you try this, insert a screw in the top so you can pull it out if needed while fitting. Otherwise it may bind up and very hard to pull out. ( screw to be removed after successful)

Good luck
