I built a Strat from new parts 6 weeks ago. Two weeks ago I put on a Graphtech nut to help keep it in tune. A few days later I noticed when I hit the 3rd or 4th strings I got a vibrating sound from the pickguard area. It's not the pickup covers and it's not the nut or fret buzz. (I had also taken the pickguard off at that time to resolder two wires). Any suggestions where it may be?

Is the guard firmly flush to the body? It might be one of the connections or hardware underneath hitting it. Good luck!

check all the screws including the back, jack socket and neck plates. does the hum occour wherever you play on these strings or is it just open notes, if its just open notes does it happen when you play the same note on a completely different string. When guitars are played in abit things can work loose and make funny hums or rattles triggered by certain frequencies. My mex strat does it occasionaly when i play a low B at concert pitch. If not it could be a neck/nut/bridge or even tuners problem.

My guess for the likely culprit is the ground wire to the bridge. It's usually the largest gauge wire and if you removed the guard to some work I'll assume you had to pull more of that wire in when you turned it over.

Try pulling some of that wire back in into the trem cavity and see if the buzz goes away. Just don't get it tangled in the springs.

I developed a frustrating buzz on a stock American Strat, though only audible when unplugged. Finally traced it to the pickguard vibrating against the body at a certain point between two screws. The screws were tight, but one of them turned out to be not dead center of the hole on the pickguard, and that was enough to set up a rattle.

Try touching your pickguard in various places when you're hearing the buzz and see if it stops.

Only solution ended up being to put a half inch or so of low-tack drafting tape on the underside of the 'guard to occupy the tiny gap where the buzz was occuring. If that applies to you, just be sure to apply that tape to the plastic 'guard, not to the finish of the guitar, because any adhesive will react badly over time with any guitar finish. In fact, now I think of it, next time I have the strings off I might just switch that tape for a sliver of naked paper - that would do fine.

Cheers - C

If it's at the pickguard for me it's usually the saddle height screws. Sometimes after adjustment, especially when lowering, the screw sometimes moves by itself instead of moving the saddle which causes the screw to become loose and vibrate.
