hello.
my 2008 YJM Strat output jack is breaking up. i have to turn the cable after inserting the jack to get the sound to be normal. can be very weak sounding.
The problem is, I took apart the Jack assembly and lifted up the pick guard assembly, and all the connections look fine. Especially the output Jack wires, connections, etc. everything is very tightly screw down and looks nice. Does anybody have any idea why the Jack acts this way if everything looks fine?
and for the record, the cable works fine and my other guitars.
thanks. :|

It's possible that the tip of the plug is hitting the far wall of the ferrule's rout, preventing it from firmly seating into the jack. I had a MIM Strat like that and after finally discovering the cause it was easy to fix by grinding a small pocket into the wall of the rout with a dremel tool to provide extra relief for the plug.

The easiest method to diagnose such an issue is to remove the ferrule and jack from the guitar (maintaining the electrical connections) then try duplicating the issue you're experiencing. If it does not manifest itself with the jack removed from the body, you'll know how to proceed.

+1 Retroverbial.

Issue is with the jack , look carefully, do test .
Forget under the pickgard.
I often put a teeth washer on jack , inside the guitars

Does the cable snap in and stay snug and/or is it too easy to pull the cable out? If so, squeeze the metal input together for a tighter fit. That was a problem I had.

thanks. Regarding all your replies: the metal that contacts the cable tip is well inside the travel path of the tip, so i didnt think it would be that. also the cable solder i fine; and it doesnt happen on the other guitars. the cable locks in tight, and what fixes it is rotating the plug, not pushing/pulling. most often rotating clockwise until the sound returns to normal. by a teeth washer does that mean the locking washer with teeth like the ones that come with a pot assembly?
well...i never did test it with the cable, so I'll do that first chance i get.

Try replacing the jack with a mil-spec, Made-In-USA Switchcraft type. It sounds like the ground collar of your existing jack is too loose to maintain positive contact.

These switchcraft are trouble free for your life and are standard on every American made Fender I know . Available in any good music store.

I had that issue one time even using a brand new Switchcraft jack.
I think it was on the MIK Koa Strat pictured below in my tag-pic.
The bodies are routed using CNC so at the time I surmised perhaps a different supplier was used for the jack-mount plate, possibly stamped slightly differently, relocating the jack closer to the bridge.
Hopefully all CNC machines at all locations all use the same dimensional specifications ... but who really knows?
We know not all bridges are the same size.
I did not measure or compare any jack plates since the cause of the issue wasn't my immediate concern but rather finding the fix.
I remedied the problem with my Dremel, carving a small relief into the cavity wall.

Be sure to install the furnished star washer on the inside between the jack and the ferrule to prevent the jack from slipping and rotating out of position. A beauty washer should be installed on the outside, beneath the retaining nut.

Yes this picture show a teeth washer, but why I never see that when I ordered from different stores over the years ?

IMO this is not the "standard "package and the seller do a lot of money to charge you few dollar only for the teeth washer

Tubesand more; $1.80
Your e-bay seller $4.99
Teeth washer cost ; $3.19
