Guitar Center is like the Wal-Mart of guitar shops. Thier employees are extremely under educated and seem to have no expirience with guitars. DONT SHOP THERE

I near a couple Sam Ash & Guitar Center locations...
I visit these stores usually to look and play. Sometimes I even ask questions, but I usually find myself telling them things they did not know about the instruments & equipment they are selling. Not to mention the fact they don't know the answer to my question... They often run to the back room to a computer to look on the fender web site (that I already looked on that doesn't have the answer)... HA!
(I used to work at Sam Ash in pro audio & sold some guitars there myself. There was a local store here called Thoroughbred which was later bought by Sam Ash - I worked there for a couple years through that time.)

I bought my Pro Tools® digi003 Factory
Image
from Guitar Center but I do not buy guitars from them.

I am currently buying 2 strats (brand new) but NOT from the big stores...
When it comes to electric guitars & bass I prefer to buy from Stevie B's Total Guitar. They are local to me in this area... very experienced & knowledgable. There is a fender certified tech (Clay) that has been doing it i think 15 or 20 years now... well after that long who's counting anymore? I can't always buy from them for example after I pay my 2 new strats off
I plan to buy an Ibanez JS1000
Image
but StevieB is not an Ibanez dealer... But I know who to goto for that... (Rich Harris at IbanezRules.com) but thats a whole nother topic.

Anyway the guys at Stevie's have become my friends since the time I bought my first instrument from Stevie B himself (Used Blonde Musicman StingRay Bass back in 98. Got awsome bass for a GREAT price)...
Looks like this one:
Image
We actually have conversations about the instruments there... not busy body "I don't know"s from a room getting bombed with phone calls... anyone can hang a tag on their shirt that says guitar tech... but this is a craft that takes experience...

By the way this is not the first time we have seen exactly what happened to you posted in this forum... Common mistake? More like inexperienced, not trained, & under payed help at the corporate stores... It reminds of being in walmart or somthing... All the souless instruments they sell & keep in stock for beginners or the non serious player... they got some good people but they use them to stock shelves not quality guitar personel... what a shame. Support the guru's if u can find em, it's worth it to us all!

Most Guitar Centers do tend to have a lack of knowledge with their staff. When a store first opens they have some really good people but they soon get fed up with GC's policies and leave. The next wave of hires are "just good enough". Anytime I have had to go there for an emergency part I usually get a blank look followed by an invititation to come behind the counter and find the part myself. Even in the drum dept!!!

Your best bet is to do the research yourself. Dimarzio and SD both have great specs on their sites regarding dimensions.

I have a SH-4 JB in one of my tricked out Strats. There are several ways to wire it. I had a push/pull splitter switch, but eventually took it out and just use it stock. Here is the wiring info -

Good luck!

I have modified my MIA Lone Star Strat with an SD JB SH-4.
I have put dow the pickguard, make a drawing of the wiring from the HB,
took down the old HB and set in the new with same wiring.

So it was no problem. Try it.

Cheers :D

A 'tech' at Guitar Center? One can only presume he's as competent as their sales personnel.

Here's an aside which many of you may already understand but we should recognize in this discussion. Seeking a high level of competence in the kind of service we are speaking about demands a willingness to pay a respectable fee for the techs time and expertise.

It takes time for someone of that ilk to build that kind of a following and client base. And the competition can be tough, witnessing the knowledge bases displayed on these pages.

I know of a small 'mom and pop' dealer who cannot sell Fender because he cannot generate the volume the company requires before they will sell to him.

It certainly would be of help if individuals recommending responsible/capable/knowledgable service techs to provide their geographic location or websites if available.

Doc

I was sold a JB yesterday but after reading SD and suggestions from others it would be a very bright HB for a Strat. I ended up trading it for a DiMarzio F-space Fred when I dropped my Strat off. It's a local mom & pop style shop but not to small, they cover all kinds of instruments.
