I recently notice the top edge (playing orientation) of my Olympic white has started to turn a weird shade of pinkish brown! I have seen other posts like this in a different forum, however the person blamed it on the inside of their case, which I assume is the orange color. However, the lining of my case is black. So I am pretty sure, but not 100%, it has nothing to do with it. I honestly dont like it ! I dont mind the yellowing that usually happens to olympic whites....in fact, I welcome it. But this is just a really strange color and it is only along the top edge of the guitar. I dont think it is caused by me because it is along the entire upper edge. Not just where my arm rests. Anyone else out there experience this? I honestly dont know if anything can be done without getting drastic, which I really dont want to do. But I really hate that the color now is very non-uniform. The guitar has lived mostly inside the case when I am not playing it, however there have been periods of time, sometimes weeks, where I leave it on the stand. There is not a strong patch of sunlight where it sits. Just normal lighting in a non-smoking houshold. I am really baffled !

I would definitely not rule out the case as the source of the discoloring. Black is a mixture of various components, so it may be the "pinky brownie" part gives in.
You could test my theory, at your own risk of course; take a clean white rag, rub it against the case lining in a somewhat hidden area. Continue with some water, then some solvent added to the rag. Obviously, if the rag becomes pinkish brown, get a new case.

What have you done to clean the guitar? Zippo fluid + cotton rags + lots of elbow grease might do the trick.
Protect it afterwards with a commercial guitar cleaner of your favorite brand; almost all of them leave a protective layer.

Hey, wait - I forgot to ask for a pic

jmattis, thank you for your ideas. I will give the zippo a shot and see what happens. I will also try the "rag" idea, which is brilliant ! Thank you.

Here is a picture. It doesnt show up great as you can imagine since its a white guitar. But you can sort of see it here and in real life, it is darker than what is shown in the picture.

You need to post the correct link, akz28......

On the right side of your Photobucket page featuring the photo you'll see some boxes labeled "share this image". Click the one marked "IMG" then drop it into the body of your message.

As for your guitar's discoloration, I would try some very mild automotive paste wax such as Carnuba. Then determine what caused the staining in the first place and eliminate it.

It's not too bad in the pic, it's in an area that the audience won't see - and under stage lights a white guitar takes any hue the best boy decides. Plus, it's the first sign of natural relicing. All in all, does it bother anyone else but you?

Carnauba is often an ingredient in those guitar cleaners I mentioned.
But first I'd try getting rid of the discoloring - so it won't get "sealed" under the wax.
The AmStd 2008 is PU finished, so the finish can take almost any chemical without damage if the Zippo fluid won't work.
In severe cases of discoloration (or just OCD...) an abrasive (like Farecla/Meguiar) followed by re-polishing, then applying wax is the only working solution.

Thanks for the tips on posting the photos and the replies.

I do have several Stratocasters......5 in all.....this is the only one that I would cringe if it got a scratch or ding. I dont know why I feel like this about this particular one, but I do. So of course this is the one getting the discoloration.

I will try some of the suggestions. Thank you both very much !

I'm with you on that. I treat all my gear respectfully which is why even my older guitars and amps still look relatively pristine.

Follow jmattis's advice to the letter and you should be able to remove that staining. The key to success when using any abrasive is a gentle application, just as if it were an original lacquer finish on a vintage automobile.

A few years ago I was looking at an Olympic White MIM Strat. Brand new in the store and just as I was about to go "yes I'll take it" I noticed it had a greenish discoloured patch on the back near the upper horn. Weird.
