Well this all started in another post but rather than pollute that post I thought I should start a new one.
It is all very boring but we had a discussion on whether SCNs were stacked humbuckers or a single with a dummy coil.
My thought was that since fender has a hotter coil for the bridge on the sss strat and it is wound in series rather than parallel it had to be a humbucker. If just a dummy coil was used then a series wound would reduce level due to a higher resistance and remembering that the second coil if a dummy would not be contributing to the output only adding to series resistance.
Well then I looked at the Bill Lawrence patent http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/All_A ... atent2.htm
In it it appears that the lower coil is not influenced by the string due to the magnetic field separation ... a bit like a DiMarzio...I was also confused with the 6 pickup slugs since I expected each slug to be ferrous and carry a magnetic charge north and south.
Anyway I had an old SCN with a single dud lower coil so thought I would experiment.
In fact the slugs do not appear to be very magnetic but the field is generated by the other magnets as per the diagram and the photos

So is the lower coil just a dummy?
As mentioned I only had the upper coil intact but thinking further if the upper and lower fields were separated and if I flicked the pickup over then the upper coil would now act as the lower coil.
If there was no influence by the strings between the fields then the output from the now lower coil should be close to zero.

This was not the case and in fact the output was a pretty reasonable single coil sound.
There may be some flaws in my logic and feel free to point them out but from this IMHO the SCN is a stacked humbucker ... :D
