I got this Strat in mint condition from a local musician who didn't play it enough to keep. It's a Corona, CA HSS. As near as I can figure, this is a GC exclusive model. He showed me the S1 switch on the volume knob. The tone difference was interesting but I didn't understand it at the time. He told me that it switches phasing with the mid/neck pups. That didn't make much sense. I watched the GC promo video and it seems more like it splits the dual-coil into a simple bridge pickup.

Can anyone verify / explain the mystical S1 voodoo?

How about posting a photo of the guitar - GC has had a few different special models. If it's the current GC special model called the "USA Professional Strat" then what you saw in the video is correct - the S-1 switch just splits the Humbucker into a single coil.

The guy you got it from was describing the S-1 switching as used on other Fender models like American Deluxes and the 2003-2007 HSS American Series (the name they used at that time instead of "American Standard") model where it does give you different wiring options for every position on the 5-way switch.

The S1 can be wired to do different things. It's just a switch, although an advanced one :)
You can get the general idea from the S1Tech talk page There's a link on that page bottom to Fender's wiring diagrams, if you want to check those.

To go beyond that, you'll have to specify the guitar model - the Dealer Exclusives, Special/Limited Editions and Fender Special Runs come in so many variations - and the diagrams aren't often available.

You could always ask GC...

COMMENTS: Special run for GC. Originally introduced as an Anniversary model with SCN pickups. It was also released by GC under the name, “American Special Series”. When we introduced the American Special Series instruments,...the name of these were changed from American Special to American Select. When the price point of the American Deluxe guitars went up, GC wanted to keep this guitar in their lineup at the same price point. This was achieved by replacing the pickguard assembly with an American Series loaded with Tex-Mex pickups. The guitar caught on well and was kept on as a proprietary FSR for them and Musician’s Friend.

WRENCH SIZES: Truss Rod Wrench p/n 0018622000 (3/32” Hex)
